Been a while coming, but my TRX is done.

Post by Zanx » Mon Nov 07, 2011 10:30 pm

Finally, my kickarse TRX has had the magical dust sprinkled on it by Chris at XBikes and is now MOT'd and ready to roll. My apologies for lack of pics, they will be coming soon, but I just wanted to share the moment with people who appreciate the bikes.

I'll start with a mod list.

870cc pistons
Head flowed by some chap at Cosworth
Over cams
FCR39's
Full Akro
WP/USD forks
320mm PFM discs, grabbed by a pair of 6 pot Billets
ECU earthing mod (picked up 5hp through this alone)
FZR400 headlght.

I'll post the dyno charts when I get them, but the curve is mad, almost peak torque at 3000rpm and flatlines till 9000rpm then peters off slightly thereafter. It'll hit redline in top on standard gearing. It's making about 90hp at the wheel, although the torque curve rings my bells more than HP, but 90 is mighty respectable IMO and let's not forget this was built in 1996, before big BHP twins were as common as they are now. As far as the noise goes, well it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, everything within a 5 metre radius just shudders and resonates when the engine is revved and the only noise from the engine apart from RAAAARRR!!!!! is the tappety tap of the flatslides, no usual TRX clunk and clatter, this is one tight built engine.

just got to get a decent rear shock, maybe Wilbers, and get Darren at MCTechnics to set it up and change the springs in the forks and that should be it.

I know Chris won't read this, but I just want to say thanks for doing such a good job and I look forward to ragging the arse off it as soon as it's insured.

Phuk72 will vouch that I'm not just spamming for Xbikes.

Just 90 bhp. :?
Are you sure you`re happy with that? My virtually stock motor with a pair of FCR`s and stubby race cans on stock headers makes over 88 bhp!
The motor needs a refresh now too as she`s started to burn some oil, although not excessively I suspect some compression loss past the valves and seats too.
An ECU earthing giving you 5 extra ponies, how does that work?

We need pics, it sounds nice!

Also, what is the ECU earthing mod? TPS bypass?

The old motor, stock with 77,000km on it only managed about 55hp on the same dyno, so yes I'm more than happy with the outcome. Like I said, BHP is great in the pub, but it's oomph that puts a grin on your face.

M.V. Sorry I should have said the TPS bypass mod instead. Earthing 2 leads (as documented on this very forum) fully advanced the ignition from 0 to max rpm and stopped the revcounter needle doing the happy dance.

Ahaaa the TPS mod, well if you were after mid range and real world tractability you would be better off with it in all honesty.
I`ve got the TPS on my FCR`s, I tried riding the bike with the TPS mod and preferred the power delivery with it all connected.
Off the top of my head (no dyno sheet in front of me) I get 69 lb / ft of torque with it connected and as I said earlier just over 88 bhp at the wheel.
That`s without a high compression over bore and head work, just carefully matched inlet diameters from the FCR`s throught the inlet stubs and 10mm longer than stock collars on the FCR`s.

That sounds like a nicely sorted bike, well done!
We need some pictures.
Agree that these mods should be giving more power, even if the FCRs are only 39 and not 41s.
That original bhp figure is very low, should be in the 70s even on an old motor. Maybe your guys dyno is reading a bit conservative. You should be mid-90s at least with fcrs, pipe, tps mod and overbore.

I agree about the TPS. How did you get the tps working with the fcr's?

My FCR`s were already fitted with the TPS mounting plate, longer spindle etc, they are available from Keihin stockists like Allens or Sudco. See the `other` FCR39 thread for a Sudco link.
Here`s Allens:

I never even knew they existed. I'll see how it goes without it before committing to more dyno time.

Thank you. :)

Sure is :D

Mini update, I changed the gearbox sprocket for a 15T and it's made a massive difference, goes like stink and makes the most of it's now 10,500rpm redline.

Still need pictures though :D sounds like a cool bike!
Understeer - when you hit the fence with the front of the bike.
Oversteer - when you hit the fence with the rear of the bike.
Horsepower - how fast you hit the fence.
Torque - how far you take the fence with you.

Hey mince when you talk about 10mm longer collars????? ... Looking on the motorcyclecarb.com site ... they had collars there for FCR's but no pictures or are you refering to the spigott adaptors on the FCR's that mount the FCr's to the manifolds.... Enlighten me please

Yes Cobba the alloy inlet collars / stubs, sorry to be a tad misleading.
My FCR`s came with collars that were too short for the TRX, the right hand (viewed from sitting on the bike) carb actually fouled the oil tank filler neck so I ordered some alloy inlet collars left long with unmatched diameters so that I could adjust their length and have them machined to match all the diameters too.
My friend and tuner recommended that the minimum be taken off their length with just enough to clean them up and match them etc. Then we would see how the inlet `length` worked for us on the dyno. We were both happy with the outcome so they were left as they were if I remember correctly.
Again as with many of the intake / carb needs, sourced from Allens in the UK.
Ahaaa, found the thread where all this was discussed Cobba, read my posts  :
