anybody had trouble with misfires in the rain?
Mine normally runs fine but started misfiring last night, cleared up with a squirt of WD 40 when I got home, but started missing again after a couple of miles this morning.
Last bike I had that did this I had to change the coils

Mine also did it in heavy rain - down to one cylinder then the 2nd suddenly cut in and spun the rear - disturbing!

I replaced the coils and she is now fine.
1996 vintage now sold. 1999 FZS600 Fazer, 2006 YBR125 & 1981 RD350LC left to keep me entertained.

Kinda figured that might be the answer.
did you use standard Yamaha coils or Dynacoils or something else?

Mine did it once many moons ago in very heavy rain. Kept spluttering and cutting out but managed to get it home. Once it dried out the problem was gone.
If everything seems under control
your just not going fast enough.

wet running is a common problem on the TDM & XTZ, they dont all do it, but a significant number do
the answer is to seal it up using amalgamating tape on the leads/coils (after drying it out ofcourse)

I bit of silicone around the point where the leads exit the coils works on Bandits. (Mine used to suffer terribly in the wet).

Never had a problem with the TRX, despite riding through foot deep water this morning.

Thanks guys, I did notice that the coils are very exposed, once the WD40 came out :evil:
maybe if they were n't so exposed this wouldn't be a problem, but London rush hour in the dark and rain with a misfiring bike was crap.

Who of you remembers the early Mini's
The distributor (remember them) was at the front of the motor behind the grill and in even reasonably heavy rain, the dizzy would get wet and the bloody things would cease to function, leaving the owners stranded on the side of the road. Once the heat from the engine had dried them out away they went again.
The problem was solved when a rubber cover was fitted over the distributor cap, to replace the various home made efforts which usually consisted of plastic shopping bags and insulating tape.
