Re: What did you do today? Cobba's rebuild

I continued on with my cosmetic and wiring alterations today and it was something I've had on the to do list for a few yrs now.
I chopped into the rear guard to tidy up the lines to follow along the bottom of the rear tail section.
Gone are the rear indicators and the mounting sections on the rear guard.
Image

Image

I have done a rough chop to start and shall tidy it all up tomorrow and cover any exposed parts of the rear under tray with carbon fibre contact. There will be very little as I'll move the number plate mounting bracket up as far as I can.
I've changed the tail light to an L.E.D. one I was given by Kym 4 yrs ago that I had mounted on my trackday tail to get me too and from the track. It mounts in further than the std tail light too and doesn't protrude out so much.

Image

Image

And as for indicators... Well they are mounted in the tail light itself and the LED tail light has a unique signiture... TRX
The area either side of the TRX light are covered in yellow LED's and all the LED's between the TRX light up as your brake light forming a solid red block in the centre.

I'll post photos over the next few days of the finished look.
I've been sniffing around for a hugger for a littkle while but I need one to fit a 180 rear tyre.
Swing arm bracing may be on the books too so no rush for the hugger yet.

Then I'll remove the motor from the frame to make it easier to fit the head and dial in the cams. I'll use an old std MLS gasket and check valve clearances just for peace of mind. But I'm confident I'll still be over 2mm.

I dont blame you for removing the motor for top end work, its so easy to get out on the TRX that if I have much more than valve clearances to do on mine I just drop it and work on it on the bench

Yes I'll give it another coat of paint at the same time.
A few cases got scuffed up on that last slide so it will tidy that up again.

Once the fairing off and radiator, the motor comes out quite easy as you said Paul.

The frame inhibits mounting the dial gauge and its so much easier working at bench height.
Frame needs a few mods with extra bracing being put in place just for the hell of it..  so I'll tick that from the to do list at the same time.

The tail light is illegal….sorry mate, but with your licence issues I would have thought that you would be doing everything posable "not" to draw attention to yourself.

Also the rear guard must end 45 deg from the centre axle or greater, with the rider seated, check that…only the tail light, brake light, number plate light and rear reflector can be combined into one light. The indicators must be separate from the tail light unit.

Also from the beginning of the year you must have engineering approval for any mod to the suspension or steering. If they want, you'll loose the complete bike and you licence for a very long time.

Oh and that also go's for upgrade brakes as well. Apparently the frame is not designed to comply with the greater braking force….

45* issue is no longer a problem so no more tail tidies needed.
Mounting the indicators from the number plate bracket is an easy solution which was my first thought.
I've seen a couple of the new Japanese sports bikes with the combined indicator/ tail lights .
There's always a way around these things hence the rear hugger..

Wrong, re-read the amendment, ONLY lights fitted from the manufacture, and comply with the ADR are exempt. As for the 45deg, once again the amendment for QLD states that this is still a requirement. The tail tidies are cool, but must comply with the QLD act, i.e. 45 Deg….. Your life, your bike, your money your licence..

The act was amended in Nov 2014.
If I run a rear hugger that covers the whole width of the tyre and re fit a reflector then I can gain approval.
Vehicle standards instruction (M4.1)
Technically the guard should not be modified BUT I can gain approval and that's all I need.

Minor Modifications on motorcycles covers the LED's with no issues on motorcycles .

The vehicle standards bulletin motorcycle check list
Rear indicators need to be 180mm apart so easily covered when they are tucked in either side of the number plate as I was originally going to do.

I got plenty of time up my sleeve thanks to QLD Transports monumental $%ck up... :x :x and the frame needs to go to Dave Kellett anyhow so my boxes can all be ticked.
The bike still will look pretty much like a std sports bike with std paint scheme and nothing really to catch the attention if not speeding...

That's great, it the approval that you need and also check the "modified front end" may be a simple drop in and see deal. The indicators will still look sweet tucked up under the duck tail and in tight.

Here"s some photos I've had stashed away for the last couple of years on what I'm trying to achieve.
The bolt holes underneath is where the section containing the 2 narrow wells that bolts on under the tail light section.
With the rear guard section and number plate holder removed I have a nice square finish then I'll bolt a metal sheet underneath with a fold as my number plate holder.

Problem sorted for the the number plate and indicators mount. 8) 8)
I'll bolt the main body under the rear of the undertay. The number plate mount attaches with vertical angle position options and the indicators will be located with the 90* brackets. Here too it gives multiple width selections so I can easily find the 180mm to keep things legal. Choice also to mount the refector under the numberplate or use the tail tidy extension bracket again meet any legal requirements.
