Too loud?!
As my previous posts, I've been looking at alternative pipes for my TRX, but can't stretch to new ones. Are race pipes just too loud to live with or do they save lives?! I don't use the bike on a daily basis, but wondered how many of you run loud pipes and what your opinions on them are.
Thanks as usual for you input!

Standard cans are too quiet.
I did a 'bafflectomy' on a standard set and loved the mellow sound (but they were still as heavy as #*@! , so finally managed to aquire a set of MTC cans with short dB killers which are better. Frequently run without the 'killers' though and they are not anti-social (at least I don't think so) ... and sound awesome on the over-run

Rubber side down, Red side up is my preferred riding style.

Re: Too loud?!
I had twin Motad Venom cans on my standard TRX road bike for a while and they sounded great. Not too loud but a lot better sounding than stock cans and lighter too.
Now with lots of engine mods and an Akra/Devil race can (104dB) it is very very loud. It is a track only bike but when I occasionally fire it up on the front drive before a track day, the noise reverberates off the houses opposite and it is quite offensive if you dont appreciate the sound of engines. Luckily I don't leave to ride too work at 5:30am every morning. It is in my opinion way too loud for a road bike. Hurts my ears and would be a huge pull for the plod. MOT may be difficult too?
But then I have just hit 50!
Most cans should be alright if you have the option of fitting dB killers.

Re: Too loud?!
I stumbled across Danmoto stuff the other day. Seem relatively cheap, but reasonably well built. I havn't got one personally, and I get the argument that you get what you pay for, but this could be an option (someone here might have first hand experience with them....). From what I have heard and read they are quite loud, so you would purchase the DB Killer with them, but might be an option for you....
Understeer - when you hit the fence with the front of the bike.
Oversteer - when you hit the fence with the rear of the bike.
Horsepower - how fast you hit the fence.
Torque - how far you take the fence with you.

Re: Too loud?!
I run a set of standard cans, yes they are heavy compared to other makes and models but a few extra ks does not bother me. And just how much does it effect the performance?.
Personally, I like to go about my business quietly. I find that on any sort of a run loud cans become tiresome.
I got a set of bafflectomied cans which, when I used them, got glares from the copper that lives a few houses down from me. plus they just attracted the wrong sort of attention

Re: Too loud?!
Some good points guys. My thinking is, as I mainly use the bike for having a blast and reliving my yoof I could live with loud cans. If I was going for a run somewhere in particular I could put the standard cans back on.
A lot of my early bikes were two strokes, leading up to a RG400 and a RG500, so I was really into hearing my bikes! Still got some footage somewhere from when I used to strap a video camera on the tank. A lot easier nowadays with the likes of GoPro! It still brings a grin to my face whenever I watch it! I'm in my last year as an under 50 by the way, but still love the buzz a bike gives me.

Re: Too loud?!
Danmoto cans were tested to destruction by performance bikes(did not take long),
you could build better your self using these here peeps http://www.pjengineering.co.uk/
My ntv650 had a holey motad and at £170+ i found an end can off of the bay for £5.50 and modifing a mini exhaust part(£25) I had a nice new carbon zorst, I made sure the exhaust was quite long so the gasses had more `fluff` to be absorbed by as I leave for work at )4:50ish and arrive back at 01:30 somedays(not the same days) I checked with the neighbours and they cant hear it
another thing you can do is have a reduction in the end can outlet by around 8%, this allows the exhaust to absorb more noise while still being less restrictive, or use db killers

Re: Too loud?!
I put the standard exhaust back on today as I went to one of those police training things and didn't want to get told off (although a Harley was there which was still louder)
Standard cans are too quiet and so boring, makes the trx sound like any other bike, doesn't even sound like a big twin, and either I was having a bad day but I really feel like the bike was behaving different with the extra weight of the exhausts, I usually have tiny carbon ones so there must be around 10kg difference which I think is fairly noticeable on a bike.

Re: Too loud?!
My plight has been sorted! After losing out on several pipes on flea-bay I've managed to sort some through the forum, a real set to boot. Many thanks to Chris, can't wait to get them fitted and give it a blast. Also feel slightly humbled to see such well looked after TRXs. I feel the need to give mine some TLC and a damn good clean and polish!
