Engine Repaint

Hi guys im after some advice to what my next step should be iv bought a 96 TRX the engine is running sweet but its has been painted poorly in silver bolts and all. Is this simply take out the engine cover the holes and get it sand blasted then sprayed. I am capable with a spanner and have a garage to do the work.

Ey up, I've just started mine, going from silver to black. Mine is out the frame and lashed up to the roof trusses in me lab. I've got most of the pipes and bits and bobs off. The rocker cover is off and cleaned ready for graphite grey. I cleaned the engine a couple of times with tonnes of wd40 and then a couple of swills with soapy water then a rinse with clean. Very messy and we now have no bedding left. Used a pot scourer and a tooth brush then a dry off with paper towels.
One of the lads on here had the great idea of wrapping stuff in tin foil, which I've just started on.



I'm going to spray the whole thing satin black then replace the nuts with some nice allen heads something like these. I've probably got most of them tbh though.

Hardest bit to clean was round the front. I gave it a bit of a wiz with a wire wheel in me grinder but nothing was really flaky, just blackened round the zorst so a rub with sandpaper got most off. By no means perfect though and ffs don't expect much from me on the painting front. I can't paint for toffee, ask our maud
Biggest pain in the arse was getting some pj1 most seem to use, near impossible and mega bux and I ended up getting something else. The so called automotive paint suppliers round here are shite annall.

Preparation is the secret to a durable and satisfying paint job lads....a really good thought is using a powder cleanser, like Jiff or something usefull to clean a bath or stove top....a water based powder cleanser used with a scotch brite pad.
Wash off the residue and use a quality etch primer ..rattle cans ok, but the initial needs to be a good base for whatever will sit on top...spend the time and money on the cleaning and primer.

Resprayed my motor in matt black before rebuild.

Degreased thoroughly and then rinsed in brake cleaner.

Looked great til I slopped half a pint of unleaded all over it when playing with the carbs and fuel pump this weekend.

Now not looking that great despite good prep.

Luckily I'm not that fussed about the appearance of my steed as long it is good mechanically.

Why the fuk has this happened ?

Did it in satin and thought it was a tad dull so I thought I'd do it gloss. Anyroad, gave it one coat and all was well and looking much better, waited half an hour and gave it another and it looked ace. Went away for 2 minutes and went back to see this shit Same make of paint annal I feel like getting hammerred.





Its happened in a few smaller places annal. WTF

its reacted. It happened to me once when I was painting my TDM.

not sure whether its the timings of applying the paint or the fact that you are applying fresh paint onto dry but new (and not fully cured) paint.

either way some people would like that crinkly finish

Little bit hard to tell from any photo because reflection & colour can be confused, but if it's crinkled it could possibly be reaction of a lacquer base over an enamel. That'll crinkle it. You can put enamel over lacquer, but not the other way around.

I feel your pain. The good thing about doing a TRX is that the set-backs are worth it, and the end result will always be better for the extra effort.

Just gonna have to rub the bastard down and sort it. Biggest pisser is its set me back a few days. I was hoping to have thenjun nailed in to the frame for Sunday afternoon, now its looking like Wednesday

Yeah , I'm with Brett on the acrylic over the enamel...have a look at the paint you used both times, looks like you've got an acrylic over the enamel...or the top coat has a gloss accelerator.....nasty ....!
Probably take weeks to dry off completely to sand blast it off.....and the crinkles in the photo is porus and won't stick...
Paint strip that enjun Yoosey...and start again, you won't be happy unless you do....imagine if it was an Aprillia pump..

It was this stuff. I did nearly 2 cans of satin on it and it looked matt so went over it with gloss. Can't understand why it was ok applying 5-6 coats of satin every half hour. Then after 1 coat of gloss it was luvly but after another half hour and another coat that happened, and only in certain places Same stuff, same method.

As for starting again,,,,no ferkin chance. It was proper hard after an hour last night and I managed to wet sand a fair bit off.
Shit like this pissis me right off, took me time, followed the rules and boom,, disaster. Good job we have single malt

Single malt good stuff like acrylic on enamel it's no different malt on ice works a treat but malt on cola..
