black engines

can somebody help me please? a friend of mine has just bought a trx, it has metric speedo and is red with a white frame it also has brembo calipers. the thing i need to know is, the motor is black and i think i have read somewhere that the black engines are in a higher state of tune that the silver ones, a bit like bandit engines 600 and 1200, is this the case or am i mistaken, thanks

Hi

Sounds like a Japanese home market model ......... engine is same state of tune ( I have a black engine in mine ) but Ive heard that they had a restricted rev range and you need a home market CDI

Im sure someone will be along soon who has the low down

Yep, black engine, white frame, brembos are early Japanese import models sold officially by yam uk though. Varoius reatrictions apply, mainly the cdi. Search Japanese spec or similar on here.

The carbs also have accelerator pumps, which is nice.
'95 4NX with K&N filter, Motad Venom cans, YSS PD valves, Ohlins fork springs, 530 C+S, Green CDI, 11/16 radial master cylinder, +30mm jack up dog bones. Enjoyable money pit.

True, the only difference in the black and the silver motors is the colour..the CDI is RPM restrictive, and the carbs have an accelerator pump similar to the FCRs, also the brembos seem to be an upgrade to the original front calipers only to be bettered by the blue spots and then the all alloy gold spots.
Wouldn't Mind a set of the import brembos for prosperity.

IIRC the imports were japan spec and preceded the ones with sumitomo calipers, so we got a ' downgrade ' with the 96 export model ;)

So the Brembos are at the bottom of the performers..?

Arr... myths of the urbanites.
Imported Yamaha TRXs 101 (with apologies to Fung and Alex whose post I did'nt see until I had posted this)

Here are some of the difference between the Japanese Home market models which came into Aust as Imports.


Slightly less diameter and slightly softer springing in the front forks.
Brembo calipers on the front.
Black faced speedo with a white faced rev counter.
As mentioned above, pumper carbs.
In Aust, (I guess the same applies elsewhere) speed restricted to 180 KPH (search on here to read about the method used to bypass this restriction.)
Most, but not all, Imports will have a 2 tone paint scheme. IE, Red frame with pearl white tank, mudguards, rear sub-frame panels.
As far as I'm aware, they all had black motors.
Mine is a 1995 model, I'm unsure if later models into Aust were any different)
I'm not aware who imported them in,for example, the UK, but here in Aus the main importer was a company call Otobai, who was/is a private company. some of the bikes came in with various accessories, for example ...huggers. Different exhaust systems, different bars, and of course over the ensuing years people have bought all manner of pieces and bits from wreckers and off the market generally which see's Aus new bikes with black motors, and visa versa.
There possibly are other internal differences, but I cannot think of them at this time
and its still early

I was looking at a speedo from an import I'd pulled apart the other month. It seems like there are magnets fitted so once the speedo gets to 180kph the magnets align and creates the restriction with a signal sent to the ECU under the seat.

Most likely Cobba,one would probably find the import CDI s are same, just a simple slowing device in the speedo..
My simple slowing device for the car is called a SHE. :lol:
Surprising how well the speed is kept low too. :oops:

There was also a nother magnet that was placed on the speedo at point zero so there is the reason why if you rev the bike in neutral the limiter will cut in. This is what stops people just disconnecting the cable to get around it. So there is one magnet at 0kph and another at 180kph with the opposing magnet sitting inline with the neddle as it moves and rotates with it. The speedo comes apart pretty easy from the dash and easy to see.....

:? The only other things I remember as being different was a slightly narrower exit pipe inside the standard silencers. You can either buy a euro spec CDi, or get an FZR 400 de-restrictor! Oh yes, headlight is always on, and a 4 way hazard switch instead of a light switch.
By the way, found my old one for sale on E-bay, he wants too much for it, but is open to offers, and I can tell you more of what has been done to it as well.
