airbox/ no airbox

hi all,
I have come to the air filter part of the trx900 project, and neither airboxes are even close to fitting.

has anyone ran pod filters on their bikes? I know a few people have said the trx carbs like to have an airbox, but is that the same with fuel injection?

trumpets and pod filters would be a great solution for me, otherwise I am gong to have to build the most mental airbox hybrid in the world!

any thoughts would be welcome

Trx cv carbs like still air.
Fcr flatslide carbs can handle pods.
Injection? No idea!
My guess would be still air, and maybe some precise airbox dimensions for best flow.
Google it.

cant really find anything conclusive either way other than the usual internet unsubstantiated slaver.

An engine with carbs/cylinders side by side will blow back fuel into the airbox when the inlet valve snaps shut whether it is a CV of slide carb. The 900 injector is basically an electronic carb, although it does inject nearer to the valves than a carb but the fuel mix will still blowback. The blowback aids lower end performance with an airbox because the adjacent cylinder will suck the fuel in along with the air - with individual pods the blowback is lost to atmosphere (that's why the underside of the tank/frame/your legs etc. get a bit petrol smelly.)

Thinking about one of those box filters that bridge the pair of throttle bodies, then making up some sort of out pseudo airbox type affair, so the underside of the fuel tank becomes the airbox if you like?

I am thinking maybe a big filter that spans the pair of throttle bodies will let some of the blow back gases be gobbled up by the other TB?

We talked of this at EF eh Dandy, while you stood next to my running TRX and groped around it`s pods! Hahahahaha.
That`s not some kind of sex act you dirty minded lot!
Oh and YES Dandy, I`ll be utilising a twin sock filter from Ramair when she`s back on the road:

My atiquated works system won`t allow me to view the images on Ramairs site sadly but you need to search for the MR range of pod filters I believe. There used to be dimensions given against a pictorial view too.
Another option is to MAKE your own from air filter foam and a hot glue gun, cobba and others have done this I believe. The filter foam is readily available in sheet form all over the WWW.

My Ramair twin sock filters fit over the inlet trumpets inside the air box nicely.
A light soaking of filter oil is needed too.

I am going to have a crack at making a tdm900/trx850 hybrid airbox.

if it goes wrong I will just use a pair of my old footy socks over them
