Your average rider canot tell the difference of a wider rear tyre unless significantly wider.... it's just what they've read on't internet

But the wider tyre and wheel are physically heavier than the standard wheel and tyre so there must be a tangible difference, plus the wider tyre is, well, wider, so the bike has further to 'roll' around the tyre when you turn in.

Add the (much!) heavier YZF swingarm into the equation and it's a bit of a no-brainer to stick with the standard bits

I'd have to say that the TRX suits the 180 tyre because of the bike's size though, so if I was given the choice and had to use a 180 tyre on a 5.5" wheel I'd just bung it in the standard swingarm.

May well be true Kayla, but I still believe the 'average' rider cannot tell the difference and more often than not 'feels' a difference because he expected to.
I've done many years racing so do actually know the differences a tyre can make but as has been said earlier in this thread, the tyre profile can play a much bigger role in the tip in and feel.
The Front wheel has a much greater input than the rear to your average rider

When I had a YZF wheel in, I could tell the difference but suspect it was more due to the higher ride height.
I have a mate who races in the SV650 minitwins and they all run 160 and corner fast! All supermotos are 160s.
I agree the TRX looks better with a 180 rear.
On the swinger, the TRX doesnt need the extra bracing of the YZF. It just adds weight.
But I am all for doing mods just because you can: personal taste.

been racing supermoto since 2002 and have always run a 165 or 170 on a 5" or 5.5" rear rim.
On wets I would still run a 165 but on a 4,25 rim as this pulle the tread further round the sides to help with side grip.
On Aprilia sxv's I ran 180.
Tyre pressures are critical though to take advantage of any changes...
still though, none of this really matters to the mr average rider (or me now I only ride on the road) as it is purely for the track..makes naff all difference on the road
Certainly won't get you to the chippy 0.5 of a second quicker

Having nothing better to do this evening I have just weighed a TRX rear with tyre (Supercorsa 160/60);no disc or cush drive; 13.1kg

YZF rear with tyre (Michelin Pilot Power 180/55); again no disc or cush drive; 11.8kg

Thought it felt lighter when I picked it up but a surprising measurement (unless my digital scales are way out).

I am going for the YZF rear this winter not because of lack of grip (even with 878 kit, Akro can, 43t rear and purely trackday use); just because I love the look of it. Each to their own eh?

Will report back if it handles/steers dreadfully and then try to fit the 5" rim into the braced swingarm.

an i think some one may be on the wrong site ! still made me smile some of the replies
the mod would be purley for looks, I've done a lot of polishing and although the smoother surface on gear change and brake plates may make passing through the air faster(less turbulance ) i some how doubt it will make a blind bit of differance,looks nice though:)
performance and handling are fine for my sort of riding and style(wonder how i stay rite way up sometimes)slower faster/cornering doesn't realy matter
i have a super moto for mad moments and road riding is more of a defensive sport these days

Fwiw Gaz.. I looked at fitting both an R1 swinger and R6 swinger(still have that here) before opting for the RSV swingarm.
Tbh, they are both very easy to fit but are way too long for the TRX. They can be shortened but even that is a very tricky job.
I personally was looking at bringing my TRX up to date in terms of styling without screwing up the sweet handling and perhaps even improving it.
Everyone seems to have done the YZF route when modding rear ends so that to me was old news and not 'different' ( I know I'm not the first to do the rsv route either, but I did it my way) YZF is not exactly modern either.
What it worth a bit nore looking at are the latest GSXR style arms... they look like a decent candidate

why not just fit a 180 to the trx rim..advice I recieved from the tyre dist. who made a few ph calls to verify about fittiment..all was ok on a std trx rim size.. I went for a 170 once again, not an Avon like last time but a Dunlop. I've seen a 180 Shinko fitted and there was clearance from the chain...

yer good point..just reweld the crank to a 270 n cams to suit...with 2 pots firing at once.. no need for brake and rear shock upgrade and front end

i know the yzf is old hat so to speak and the aprillia arm looks awsome,seen some pics of one with both ends in very nice,is that your bike i wonder if so well done.
i have been talking talking today with a fabby who can brace the original arm however i want him to (whithin reason)
gave me some pics and ideas to mull over time is my enemy though as allways,got a full on tomoz trialin,i'll be knacred when i get back so any ideas from you guy would help/confuse the issue
was suposed to be working today but it wasn't raining this morning so i went out into derby shire on the trx i love me tdm powered xtz but the trx oooooh enjoyed it for a long time bin doing the journey actually enjoying it again,wish this weather would get better,thanks all for input
