Overflow Coolant Bottle

I have searched here for info on the rad expansion tank and didn't get any suitable answers

My problem is with the new seat/tail unit Iv built it wont allow the existing expansion tank to stay in place and I need a smaller or slimmer tank but dont know the requirements needed for it to work properly or whether a tank is needed at all ... any information is greatly appreciated.

You can look around for a small scooter one, utilise a karting one or go down this route:

Because the system is pressurised you need a head of coolant that `may` get used from a header / expansion bottle of some sort or another.
Some folk do away with them, simply use a short length of hose and plug it but it`s far safer to have a head of coolant.

Yes you can do that too, or hide a header bottle away from view as NWS870 did, nestling up under the tank.

baby bottles are the best deal. cheap, heat resistant and clear view to see how long it takes to change the colour of the cooling water to ratgrey.
I also needed the space under the seat so I put a small baby bottle behind the steering head. one hole for the cooler, one for breather.

You don't need one as long as you're prepared to check the coolant level in the rad on a regular basis.
A piece of pipe out to atmosphere will do the job but don't plug the end, you'll blow the pipe off if it overheats and collapse the hoses when the engine cools down.

Yeah just bin it and keep an eye on the level I haven't had one on my 2 bikes for around 3 years and no probs yet. I yout ran the overflow on to the exhaust so any drips just turn to steam and don't drip on th road. Check these pics at point 15. http://trx850caferacer.com/fitting-instructions/
