Triple clamp axis

Hello everyone,

Ive just bought myself the front R1 forks, but obviously I need to make a new triple-clamp axis (I dont know the right name for it). Does anybody has drawing, or measurement of this part on TRX ?

I dont want to dissasembly, measure, then make it. My thoughts are to prepare everything like bolt-in kit, and one cloudy day make the exchange

My another question is which master brake cylinder works best with yamahas blue spots ?

the blue and gold spots are best with the r6 ...14mm master and do you have the upper and lower tripples to go with the R1 forks..?
you are going to have the R1 lower tripple modded to accept the TRX stem...have heard that the TRX stem is usually smaller diameter that the R1 lower....lots of info on it with the search option here.

Yes I have the triple-clamps to suit - (01)triples and (01)forks. Ive heard that the Trx stem (yes this is the word) has smaller diameter then R1s stem where is conected to the lower triple clamps. So I need to make new anyway.

If there is no other option, I will dissasembly it, its not a lot of work.

Bigger challenge will be to suit the TRX wheel, with YZF750 speedo drive into the R1 forks, but nothing is impossible.

It's possible to TIG weld a few beads around the base of the TRX stem and then turn it down in a lathe. The TRX stem is 0.3mm smaller in diameter than the R1 stem

Hi Radek.

Use a Thunderace front wheel and you can keep your speedo drive but you either have to machine the inside of your R1 fork leg or machine a bit from both the speedo drive housing AND the inside of the fork leg.
From memory Killerwhale`s TRX has done it differently, utilising a threaded boss inside the right hand R1 fork leg, it has an internal thread to suit the TRX wheel spindle.
I`m sure he`ll chip in to this thread when he sees it.
You do not need to make a whole new steering stem either, kayla`s method or indeed a shrunk fit turned sleeve could be made to get the stem snugly into the R1 bottom yoke, if you`re not happy with it being solid enough the yoke and stem assembly can be drilled and tapped and a grub screw added for extra security.

It sounds good with TIG welding and machining on lathe. How big "overlap" do you recommend ?

I think that stem is stressed only in move, so I think that the well done overlap will be enough.

Wheel:
My thoughts were - put new bearings to suit the R1 axle, and machine one side of the speedo drive + make new specers for the other side. Maybe I will machine a little bit of the fork to do a "reaction" for the speedo drive. Hope it will work.

Kayla already gave you the difference in diameters Radek, around 0.3 mm
If it were me I would turn a tad off the TRX stem, make it 1 mm undersize, then interfearance fit a sleeve onto the stem and turn it`s O/D to suit the R1 bottom yoke.
My choice being based on the fact that I do not have access to welding facilities all the time.
I TRIED to utilise a TRX speedo drive in a Thunderace wheel between my R1 forks but there is not quite enough meat in the thing and it actually fell apart . Better to half the machining between the outer face of the speedo drive and the inside (off the boss) of the left hand R1 fork leg.

I have just fitted a TRX stem into 2010 R6 triples.
The TRX stem is smaller diameter so I just made up a spacer and pressed them in

I am about to put a 2003 R1 front end on my TRX and was going to go down the welding/machining route, but in the end decided to get a new stem made from Ally.
The stem is identical to the trx in all dimensions apart from the bottom diameter which is correct for the press fit into the R1 bottom yoke. Then I made an ally insert and pressed it into the r1 top yoke.

Possibly not the cheapest say to get the job done, but I think the best way.

Hello,

Thank you, but I have already did it - I pressed out the old stem, then measured the difference between stem and R1 yokes - and pulse welded the planchete sheet on the stem, warm the yokes to 200°C, and cool the stem to -60 and press it in.

I hope it will last.

One more question - Is it necessary to do some spacer between the upper yokes and the stem ? It looks like its not straight fit

When I tried today to fit everything together I realized, that I bought crashed lower yokes

Hope you can press out the stem without damage to put it into a new lower clamp.

Any chance of getting your money back on the lower clamp? and did the whole forks come together? might be worth gettng the legs checked out too?

Nothing is that easy as it looks at first glance
I have called him right after, and he was very suprised, as he bought it from someone else, and never used it, he will refund it, so at least he is fair. The forks are from his bike, so they should be okay.

Hooooray !

Its done - so my setup is R1 (03) triple clamps, (01) forks after revision, and (01) wheel.
It completly changed the feeling of Trix, and I think its - "everybodymusthave upgrade"

... Next stage will be the rear shock, because now I can feel, that it needs to be revised or replaced.
