Perhaps if Yamaha would let go of the 5 valve configuration and go back to 4 valves the engine meets the strict emission laws ?
Like i said with the current TDM 900 engine it wil only cost power to meet the emission standard, and were not waiting for new twin with 70 HP.
Without looking at the current engine i say, go to 1000 cc, 4 valves (so thay have a litle more room to play with the cilinderheads)
get the power up to around 110/120 hp. and the same(ish) figur torquewise and they have a winner
MT 02 styling is ok with me !

Looks like everybody is getting into mid capacity twins.

The Benelli Due 756

The BMW f800s

Like others I have been hoping like hell that Yamaha would release an updated TRX with the 900/1000 injected engine and some upgraded suspension.
I have tried the BMW 800S and ST. Nice enough but pretty bland machines. S is certainly a bit more exciting. Then tried KTM Superduke, hey there is a fun machine with enormous character.

theres a few reasons yamaha is sitting still with "twin" engine development.
Ill summarise a fair few reasons.
1: to develop a 4v head cost money and time. Also the trx doesnt like con configuration of it.. its actually a mechanical thing.
2: the twin isnt really a huge seller. They want bulk sales.. If its a smaller market, there will only be a smaller change to the line up of products. the YZF range is the biggest sellers, thus the most attention to devolpment.
4: emissions is one thing, but theres a few other things to go with it which i wont delve into.. but they can get the power output and still meet standards.
Its possible to make the TRX850 a 996cc configuration. Sure its a fairly heafty change, but it is actually quite possible with the standard block and case.
Obviously injection is easy and 6 speed via the TDM guts. 120hp is quite possible on a production donk if thats how they wanted to go..
Making a new head, cam and crank makes this very possible while using everything else as a bolt in production line operation. (standard valves can be retained from other bikes to make it a touch cheaper.
Another problem is the frame. New swingarm would be needed to handle the power. Im guessing that from a business point of view, they dont want to make a new tooling cast for yet another swingarm, but also dont want to use a R1 swinger (such as i did) as they dont want to steal the thunder from their more "racey" bikes.
Forks would be a no brainer.. some sort of USD from an older model.
Back onto the frame issue. Solid / cast seems to be the way currently,, cheaper for production cos they dont have to pay a welder to make the frame anymore.
They would have to find a new way to house the bike..
Summary,, yes the "new model" trx would be viable, but cutting corners would be the main result.
If they were to release a new "trx" of sorts.. i may not actually purchase it.. Sure im sort of on the market for a new bike.. MT01 is tasty, but so are others.. I like the trx for its imperfections but its character, not for its list of skimps.. thats what defines it..
If a new trx DID evolve, wouldnt it be picked at and all anyone would do is compare it to the old ? thats what im afraid of.. id rather stay with what ive got..
But sure id test one and prolly buy it anyway.

Slight grave dig.
In effect they already have the guts of a new model. Why not take the TDM900, fuel injected, 6 speed, perimeter framed set up and increase capacity with better heads. Put a new fairing tank and seat unit on it. Chuck some upside down forks and a late model cast swingarm and voila TRX950 ish. But the question is will they sell lots and lots of them. In the real world like has been said, they are a great bike. Who braggs to there mates about only having 100hp to their mates IL4's 140hp? The way bikes are marketed and the way guys love to have one-up on the next guy means they will be hard to sell in the same numbers as the IL4's. Pity. I am starting to seriously look at tricking a TDM to the above spec. even though I have had my bike for two weeks I can see the real world pluses of the design.
