Camshafts

Post by Tesa » Thu Mar 08, 2012 7:18 am

Hello everyone,

As Im ordering JE 878 piston kit from TTS - Performance, Im thinking about cams regrind - they offer it too. Do you have any experiencies with it, or which company do you recommend for cams ?
Do they surface refine it ? (I dont know the right word as Im not from englis speaking country but I mean - they make the surface harder to worn out).

Thank you for your answers.

... And yes, I will have Trixie's head ported.. :)

As far as I know, TTS don't regrind the cams themselves and I'd guess they send them to Kent Cams.

IMHO Kent offer the best profiles for the TRX as they focus on midrange power rather than outright power gains.

I've tuned a motor (and seen a few!) using JE pistons and Kent cams and you can expecet decent power and torque gains through the range. You have mentioned porting - presume you already have a full free flowing exhaust system.

And if you haven't got them already, have a look out for FCR41s ;)

Feel free to ask any questions - these mods have been done by a few on here

Thanks Phuk for really fast answers.

Mid range is okay as Im in midrange 90% of time ..
I dont have the free flowing exhaust headers yet, I must find someone who will make them for me - what is the difference in inner diameter ? I know that there is a chance to get new exhaust headers, but as it looks it will be only 2-1, but I wanted 2-1-2.

FCR's : Yes Im saving for them, but they are hillariously expensive .. :)

the standard headers are very restrictive - not just due to bore size but due to the almost 90 degree bend at the head that screws up gas flow. And to be perfetkly honest you are not going to see the full benefit of any tuning with these on the bike. in fact, I'd give serious consideration to waiting until you have got an exhaust before doing any tuninig work unless you are happy to spend time and money jetting (twice!).

In terms of mainstream manufacturers, not many made 2 into 2 performance pipes for the TRX but they are about - Renegade and Over being the pick of the bunch. Otherwise a 2 into 1 Akrapovic which is going to give the best bhp gains at the top end.

Kayla (on here) is arranging for a batch of exhausts made - I haven't paid any attention to the thread but I'm pretty sure she is having 2 into 2 made.

Expensive - yes

worth it - yes

without a doubt the single best bolt on performance mod you can make to a TRX.

I just HAVE to dyno with standard vs. Akra, only difference one can FEEL is a move in the powercurve upwards with the akra.
Would be interesting having numbers....

Thank you,

My idea was, that I firstly do the internals in the engine ( so I dont have to dismount it more than once ) and then I will do the "plug and play" accesories as the carbs, exhaust.. I know one company here in Czech Republic called Creptus - I have called them and they said, thats no problem to make an exhaust, but they need whole motorbike for some time, or the original exhaust headers. When it stops snowing #-o I will visit them.

Kayla wrote something that He is not sure about 2-1-2, but definetely will make 2-1.

Does anybody have Ignition timing for the Trixie ? ... From my past "drag racing" career I have programable ignition unit, so I need some starting point..

I know about the FCR's but they are something about 22 000 Czk. ( when the avarage sallary is 21 000 Czk here in Czech Republic   ) I will think about them when I sell my youngtimer yamaha xs 400 :)

I've got those somewhere - from 2 different dynos

1st one shows standard bike with Wolf slip ons running at 72bhp at the back wheel which went up to 77 with the Akra - and another 1-2bhp through the range with the Devil SB2 can (peak power was just shy of 79). This was done back to back.

Also have figures from another dyno showing (at the crank BHP) from when I first got the bike becasue it ran horribly. With the same Wolf slip ons it was making 81bhp and hit 88bhp with the Akra + Devil can. This was done a couple of years apart.

There are some more charts (posted on here) which show effect of FCRs and TPS mod as well ;)

Nope - gains all the way. The gains are bigger at the top end though
