R6 Rear shock: a few setup questions.

Post by M.V. » Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:48 am

So, all of you knowledgeable lads & ladies, a few questions re the R6 rear shock: it was horrible at first, I adjusted for preload, then went standard settings as a start point.

Standard:

Rebound: 10 (min 3, hard, max 20, soft)
Fast Comp: 7 (min, 16, soft, max, 1, hard)
Slow comp: 15 (min, 24, soft, max, 1, hard)

So, then I tried this:

R: 9
FC: 9
SC: 13

Even worse. I think I went the wrong way on rebound damping, meant to back it off, but added more

Then I tried this

R: 5
FC: 5
SC: 10

Here, I finally figured out I was going the wrong way.

Now I've got this:

R: 12
FC: 5
SC: 10

Pretty happy with it, took it for a blast out in the country & everything seems to come together at about 160km/h, really nice.

Only thing I don't like is it's very jarring around town, so I want to remove some Slow Comp damping & some some rebound damping (I understand you should as little rebound damping as you can get away with)

Also, my preload is on the second last setting, Racetech calc recomends a 10.3kg/mm shock for the TRX & I think 10.5kg/mm for the R6 with my weight, so I guess 9.8 isn't too far off, I was going to replace the rear spring, but I think it'lll be ok...

So anyway, for the questions:

Do you think I'll get away with the stock spring?

Is my presumption about rebound damping correct?

If I remove some rebound damping, will it affect high speed? ie, will it still be as nice at 160km/h?

If I remove some Slow comp, will my bike squat too much under acceleration?

& will it still wheelie? :)

Thanks in advance.

:D

Can't remember exact figure, but somewhere between 25mm-30mm-ish... More road than race.

R6 spring rate is for an 86 kg rider.. I have mine set on the second last setting when I'm two up with Janet on the back and she's 55kg.. I come in spot on at 86kg fully suited up... No wonder it's a bit harsh slower and quite stable at 160kph

So 140kg hey? Might back that off a bit :D Or get really fat...

That'll throw out my static sag settings though...

Have you done 'dynamic' sag measurements?

I've done free vs weight of bike & weight of bike vs me on bike, if that's what you mean...?

are there any step by step guides kicking about that can be referenced for the set up of suspension?

that's right.

If all of those are in 'range' then the spring rates should be OK. Go back to standard settings and then change one thing at a time - and keep notes.

It's just a matter of time and trial and error

I found THIS LINK useful for a dummy such as myself
Projection Racing 2-1 with Akropovic hex carbon can, Keihin FCRs @ 150 main, R6 shock conversion, 520 chain conversion, Ignitech ignition, Li-po battery. Further weight reduction & front suspension in progress ....

Yep, Fung did a comprehensive set up and overall profile on the useage of the R6 rear shock ...about 6 months ago. =D>

Worth a search here...

I fitted a 2009 R6 shock recently and have been going through a bit of trial and error to set it up. The high speed compression is adjusted a bit differently and is done by turns rather than clicks.

I weigh in at 85kg.
My set up is for firm road use - most of my riding is 'spirited' runs through hilly country with a combination of tight corners and sweepers. I also do occasional track days.

My front end is set up with Racetech springs and Gold Valves with 32mm of sag.

My R6 shock is set up as follows:

Preload - second firmest setting = 31mm of sag (matches front sag). free sag is 7mm
Rebound - 12 clicks out from full hard
High Speed Compression - 2 1/2 turns out from full hard (maximimum of 4 turns, recommended setting is 3)
Low Speed Compression - 10 clicks out from fully hard

I'm sure there'll be some more tweaking but these settings seem pretty good to me.

Also, if it's jarring over bumps around town I suggest backing of the high speed compression a bit (not the low speed). Sorry if you already know this but the 'speed' relates to the speed that the spring is compressing - not the road speed. Therefore if it's jarring when hitting bumps it probably means the spring isn't able to compress quickly enough to absorb the shock.

Cheers
