starting the job...

Post by Italian Red » Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:14 pm

Hi there, finally i'm starting to work on my TRX, as planned some week ago... as usual, sorry for my bad english, this is the best i can do and i hope will be enough :( .
So, i've read around the forum so i've found a lot of interesting tips, but i need some infos more, concerning frame and swingarm. A link to other topics will be also useful.
I will work on the engine later: for now my budget is still low, and i'm looking for good auctions on Ebay to find useful upgrade parts at good price.

1) I've found & bought for very few money another frame (the frame i actually own is slightly bent and in bad conditions), i've cutted away the rear parts as seen somewhere on the forum, soon will be powder-coated, but first i wish to know if is possible to reinforce the front part of the frame with metal scraps welded on the steering head and if someone have tried some similar modifications to strenghten the frame. My bike will be a track-only bike, with racing brakes and setup and the frame will be surely stressed.

2) I need a good swingarm: i have found a YZF750r one, and also a 2002 R6 one , and other model of r1-r6 are easy to find and cheap to buy.
I don't know if there's need to modify something (rear shock or linkages and the wheel)to install these parts, i know that the YZF750r's swingarm is almost perfect, but some tip will be really appreciated.
i don't want to work too much or spend big money to install one of them, the work should be fast and easy without the need to purchase parts as rear wheel, brake or other stuff...

3) Please.... tips about the fairing: an OW01 (fzr750r) fairing will fit my bike?

Thanks in advance for your help, as soon as possible i will post some picture of the work in progress.

Hello and welcome

No need to strengthen frame

YZF750 swingarm bolts straight in with no modifications required - nothing else does. Only necessary if you want to run 180section tyres - otherwise standard swing arm is more than up to the job

any fairing can be made to fit - nothing bolts straight on

Ok, less work, less time!

Well, actually the bike fits a 170 tyre (i don't know if the wheel is the standard one) , but i wish to run 180section racing tyres. So i will buy the YZF swingarm for sure.

My question is if i can use the wheel and hardware i actually own, on the YZF swingarm and if the stock shock absorber is also good.

this is good, the upper fairing of the OW01 is simply gorgeous...

If you use the stock TRX wheel, spindle etc you`ll need spacers and inserts for the swingarm to keep the smaller diameter spindle centralised.
Better to use a complete YZF750 rear end, wheel, swingarm, spacers, brake plate etc, then just bolt it all into the TRX frame.
Another member has made a special fairing bracket and has used the latest R1 shape fairing with the projector beam headlights, looks quite nice.
Search the forum, spend some time here looking through the threads and you`ll find it.
View the images on this thread to see what it would look like if you tried to use the TRX wheel etc in the YZF swingarm:

I think they're both 28mm, yes :) and you can use your TRX disc on the R1 wheel.

Yep, you can use the R1 disc. You might be required to do some mods to the rear brake caliper / mount to get everything lined up though.

thanks :D
I was wondering today what kind of mount use... discarded the TRX one (the spindle is smaller), i think will be better to find a R1 caliper mount, to avoid problems and mods.
Anyway, i keep an eye on the Ebay auction: i can buy a 10k kilometers YZF swingarm and spindle for less than 90 euros. Can i use the TRX chain adjusters on it or i must search this stuff?

Ok, this was my bike... awful. But nothing is awful if is only 20k kilometers old, crashed twice and you can buy it for 400 euros.

...asap i will post the pics of the bike after some little works (and a cardbox full of crap to give away, like the original seat and tail light).

swingarm bought, only 10K miles:

http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 500wt_1156

...next step, R1 rear wheel, for free
if someone confirm me that fits the swingarm, is mine:

http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 2822wt_940

then i'll look for spindle, spacers and rear hub.

The R1 wheel will fit fine in the YZF swingarm, The spindle diameter for a YZF and an R1 are the same too I believe, so if you buy a YZF750 spindle and adjuster bocks you`ll be sorted.

I used a 2003 XJR1300 rear wheel, blue spot calliper, hanger and rear disc, it mates up to the YZF750 sprocket carrier, you do have to make a 2mm thick spacer to fit between the calliper mount and swing arm. The XJR1300 uses a slightly larger diameter disc, 267mm opposed to 245mm. You cannot use the TRX disc as the mountings are wider apart (150mm between mounting bolt centres. You can use a rear disc and calliper off a Fazer 1000 as this is identical to the XJR. If you use the Fazer 1000 calliper bracket the spacer needs to be 3mm. The YZF750 axle and spacers fit and need no modification when used with the 2003 onwards XJR1300 wheel. Pre 2003 XJR1300 wheels have a 24mm axle size and are not suitable. You can use the original YZF750 torque arm with the XJR1300 calliper bracket. If using the Fazer 1000 calliper bracket you have to use the Fazer torque arm.

thanks to Mincehead and sadmansteve.

I've just payed the swing arm, a good deal: 100 euros including caliper mount, bracket... and shipping, i'm just waiting for it.

Concerning the wheel, i have the like-new R1 wheel with brake disc so i think will be cheaper for me looking for a spindle and a sprocket carrier that fit this wheel. I need some help and infos...

http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 2870wt_940

waiting for this items i've worked on the footpegs: i've found a Suzuki SV 650 rearsets risers, that fit frame & original rearsets almost perfectly: the distance between mounting holes is 73 millimeters!!!, a little work with a hand file... and is done.
Now i have my rearset about 3 centimeters back and 3 centimeters up, enough to make a perfect racing riders' setup (i've also used the original clip-on handlebars UNDER the upper triple tree). I will post some pics of the job when i will found my camera :-(
Here's up the risers: http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... RK:MESE:IT

hi there mates
it's a bit i am away from the forum, i had some problems and I stopped the works on the bike for a while...
Lack of job & money (i was a little depressed), the garage where I worked on the bike closed (i was VERY depressed), so i've parked the bike in a wine cellar waiting for better days... since last month . Now she is in a friend's workshop, and i'm working again after collecting parts: so i'm back with some news, and i will post some pictures soon.
Despite the lack of money, in these weeks i've found some good parts, ready or almost ready to install.
Actually i'm working in a ebay shop (if interested, look for "vendilo-roma" on Ebay or PM me, we have a lot of parts and interesting stuff) so i have plundered the warehouse and searched on ebay, taking parts at the lowest price...
Uhm... sounds good:

- Crappy bike, running, but with 30k kilometers on her back (400 euros)
- YZF750R almost new swingarm and spindle, (100 euros)
- R1 1999 rear wheel with spindle, rotor & sprocket carrier, like new, astonishing conditions (for free)
- Rearsets risers brand new (30 euros)
- Afam 520 chain & sprockets, brand new (90 euros)
- Brembo front radial master cylinder (from a 848 Ducati), used, slightly crashed but like new and fully working (40 euros)
- Front brake lever (22 euros)
- Yamaha R1front & rear calipers with pads, used, very good conditions (100 euros including the rear caliper mount and braided hose)
-Two wave Braking brand front rotors, used, taken from an old FZR 600, anyway almost new (for free)
- Rear Motorquality-Brembo rear rotor, new, (for free)
- Omp high flow air filter, new (20 euros)
- TRX genuine head with valves, used, low mileage (50 euros) and i've just finished the polishing work (is a jewel)
- Assorted ergal nuts & bolts, all new, (for free)
- Racing seat brand new ready to paint and rubber seat pad (100 euros)
- Race cone-nose (Hornet cup style) and mounting brackets brand new (about 70 euros)
(http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 1008943117)

- Two Micron mufflers, used, taken from a Vf1000R and in very good conditions (for free) ready to be welded on the original pipes (i hope they will be good)
- Two Metzeler racing tyres, medium, used for an half session (for free)
- Three vintage oval number plates, plastic, brand new (for free): i'll use two of these on the seat  i love the vintage looking. I'll paint the plates in yellow (do you remember a guy called Agostini???)
- ...naturally... vintage, GENUINE Yamaha Tz 750 tank decals (55 euros)

The bike is now painted in a classic Yamaha 70's pattern: ice white with Ferrari red stripe, simple and cheap but really lookin' great. A 5mm reflective rim tape on the edges is the final touch.
Next week i'll paint the rims in gold and i'll install the rear end, i think i'll drive this iron this summer. :^o
Let me know what do you think.
(p.s. i have a lot of parts to give away)
ciao!
