Just got to find someone talented enough to do it!
Anyone got some close up shots of the side of the TRX engine so I can see how those little side mounts work?
ps Nice to meet you yesterday Kayla

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
haha thats alright Kayla, I had plenty running about to do anyways.
Just looking at pics of the trx engine, the TDM engine is also missing the fairly large mountings for those side mounting plates.
I might have to get that lug welded on, and brace the frame where its supposed to have engine mounts. And for extra stiffness I may just make mounts for the front of the engine!

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
Why don`t you have some alloy plates milled up that will `reach` to the TDM motors front mounts either side, then marry up with the TRX frame`s engine mounts?
Polished up nicely they would look pretty good.
I still reckon you could literally hang the TRX motor in the frame without affecting rigidity, that rear alloy H casting really takes all the stresses involved, the two tringular mounts on either side don`t really do anything `structual`.
Take a look at this:

Those milled alloy frame plates are actually really attractive I reckon.

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
ok, been doing a bit thinking and looking at the triangulation points on the frame, and I think I am going to do this:
1. drill and tap the existing lug
2. make the frame dropouts to pick up the TDM900 mounting points each side (i will attempt some photoshopping soon)
edit: here's the frame dropout I am planning (same on the other side obviously):

3. make a piece of frame that bolts to the back of the the existing frame lug, and goes across to the frame mounting on the other side that is hanging in the air.
This setup has triangles all over the place, I am more than happy that the setup will be stiff.
I actually don't understand the point of those mounts just behind the main ones, with those triangle alli brackets on them. The way the trx frame is designed there is just no way it needs those? only thing I can think of is they weren't too happy with the strength of the lugs on the back of the 850 cylinder head, so they thought it prudent to add a couple of extra mounting points on the engine block. That would also explain why they decided to move the mounts to the front of the head for the 900? because it definitely wasn't for looks - the part of the frame on the TDM that picks those mounts up is a right stuck on affair!

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
ok I am going off this idea.
I have a mate enquiring about getting a lug welded onto the head in the TRX location, so everything can fit up just like factory.
I want it to still look like a trx.
still scratching my head about those addition mounts just behind the trx front mounts. My mate reckon they are so you can remove the head without removing the engine, but I am not so sure.

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
a point to be noticed is that ..as with most modern engines..the cylinder barrels are not removeable..therefore the TDM motor hasnt the need for the small triangular support mounts and reinforces the notion that they are only ON the TRX engine for support to the removal of the barrels...

interesting.
well the engine will be getting sent away on sunday to see if I can get it welded up. fingers crossed.

Just looked at a German 900 transfusion and no support at the right hand side of head anyway....coxylaad wrote:interesting.

What you´ve descided on the fuelpump? That German cut the trx tank open and made an adapter to fit it....bigun that pump!
Guess that it would be best to have that pump so CDI can control it!?

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
I cant see any close ups of that side of the bike.
I wouldn't be happy not having any mount on the left hand side of the bike.
I would have thought the engine would definitely flex about with that mount missing.

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
Why dont you drill n tap and use the mounting on the right hand side as per original (TRX) then just add (welded or bolt on) frame mounting on the left side front (original TDM) mounting, most people wouldent notice it as it would be behind the fairing.

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
I think its going to look a bit odd, and none 'TRX' I want to keep the bike looking as normal as possible.
yes I will be following the german guys suit and fitting the tdm fuel pump. that's why I bought the entire bike to break.

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
The way I have seen the 900 conversion done befor is to junk the FI and put the TRX head on the 900 engine which gives you the mounts on the head!! The smaller side mounts are not used and this doesn't cause any handling problems!!
Use some 41 FCR's and with a good exhaust you should have more poke than the injected 900!!

Re: The TRX900 Project kicks off
Update:
Finally got the engine back, and here's the progress:

So, I now have a lug on both sides of the engine.
Got some work to do on me van this weekend, but after that I should be trial fitting this up into the frame.
Still not sure whether to do a belt and braces thing and extend the frame to those front head mounts, will shall see.
