Thanks for that. I'll order a gasket and have a look. Also- a quick question about oil quantities: did an oil and filter change yesterday and I'm puzzled about the oil level. I put 3 litres in, let the bike idle for a minute, added another 0.6 as per Haynes, started the bike again and let it idle for a few minutes. Stopped the motor and I couldn't see any oil in the oil level window. I then added another 0.4 making a total of 4 litres, ran the motor for a couple of minutes again and still can't see any oil! I remember reading posts where people mentioned needing 4 litres but surely it should be showing in the level window by now? Not sure how easy it is to blow seals in a dry sump motor but I'm wary of adding more oil. What do you reckon? Cheers in advance!

If you've put 4 litres in, chances are you have put too much in but ...

Warm the bike up fully (as in take for a 15 min ride) and then check the oil

These things are a real pri--ks to do oil changes on. Mine uses 4 litres with a filter change and after a run the oil level is about 3/4 up the sight glass. Just check that the oil level in the sight glass hasn't gone right past the glass. with new oil it is hard to tell if it is full or empty.

Thanks for the info folks. I'll fire the bike up again and check carefully. Unfortunately the bike's not taxed at the moment so I can't take it out for a spin legally at the mo. Given that my lock-up is opposite a police station and the pipes I just fitted are about the loudest I've ever fitted to a bike I'd be asking for trouble! I get the impression from other posts that the TRX can take a bit of over filling without any trouble. Not sure I like the idea of driving for 15 mins with the possibility of low oil level. (Saying that I'd hate to have excess oil blown out a breather in front of the back tyre!) I owned a dry sump XT550 years ago which was hard to gauge the oil level on. I erred on the side of over-filling and didn't have any problems. I figure better a bit too much than too little- it'll make the oil run cooler as well.
