Need new Forks

Post by jake » Mon Oct 27, 2008 10:53 am

Do i have to use the TRX ones, or can i use some from a different bike ? how much do they cost. I also need the front fairing (blue) and other bits, where is the best place to find them ? Wreckers ?

If you do a search or have a look through the forums, there's lots of info on this. From memory, options include

1) Used TRX forks - rebuilt before you put them in with new shims, correct springs for your weight, oil and air gap set correctly, etc.
2) Thundercat (YZF600R 96-99) forks - requires front wheel spacer or donor front wheel. Cartridge fork enhancement kits available + more damping adjustment as standard vs. stock TRX.
3) YZF750R complete front end - tough to find these days, but IMHO the best bang for the buck if you can find one
4) R1 complete front end (believe usually 98-03 bikes) - much more work involved - much shorter forks, have to hack up the bodywork.

All of the above, e-bay or breakers/wreckers/junkyards. Or the "for sale" section of this fine forum.

What about rebuilding the ones you've got with new (pattern) stanchions? Wemoto do them but I don't know if they ship overseas. Hagon could probably do you a pair too.

Me, personally, I'd go for (I have gone for, in fact) Thundercat forks. I haven't swapped them over yet, but the forks are the same length and diameter so it's a straightforward swap. The t'cat fork bottoms are narrower where the wheel spindle goes through so a couple of spacers need to be made up to take up the slack, other than that it's a straight swap- wheel, discs and calipers can all be used off the TRX with the standard TRX yokes. Oh, you'll need to adapt the TRX mudguard to fit or get a t'cat one. Probably the cheapest 'upgrade' option and it retains a standard-ish look too, if that's your thing. I'll hopefully be swapping stuff over this weekend as I've got to get the wheels out to have new tyres fitted anyway.

Cost = about the same as replacing bent or damaged fork sliders; damping no longer a choice between wallow and stiction. If you can't find a YZF front end for a decent price or don't want to go to the trouble, that's what I'd go for instead of another set of TRX forks.

I'd imagine there are a few Yamaha alternatives that could be made to work easily-

TRX (duh!)
Thundercat
Fazer 600 (early ones)

all use 41mm forks, 100mm calipers and 17mm spindles. Same fork pitch too (200mm) so it shouldn't be too hard to nail something together.

Busters do replacement stanchions for the TRX at 60-odd pounds each, if that's any use. Probably not as the exchange rate and shipping will be £

There's a full YZF750 front end for sale, go to the 'for sale' bit here and follow the link. But, again, shipping would be £££
