re baffling (gutting) original pipes or not?

Post by Trex » Sat Oct 11, 2008 10:39 pm

G'day everyone! i got my first trx 2 months ago (blue '99') and cant get enough of it. As my wife (finance minister) and i have just had our first baby (boy) 8 weeks ago, im unable to convince her to let me get a set of staintunes.... has anyone had any success in re baffling the original cans. im looking for that sweet sound for a fraction of the cost. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have done it, it's not the greatest sound you can get out of a TRX. it is a bit of hollow sound. I left the hole wide open, you look straight in the can's

Hi Trex.. had budget constraints myself.. If you follow the instructions in( BAFFLECTOMY) you can't go wrong.
I chose to use stainless sink strainers as inserts...looks ok I think.
Not the best sound you're gonna get...but it sounds like a Rex..not a wet fart.
Staintunes $1200.00....Sink strainers $4.00 8)
The surgeon and the finished cans .....

Well, if you have any MIG welding experience and can borrow a hand riveter and a dremel, you could make your own cans. You won't get a rolled tip, but you shouldn't need a lathe to make up any of the parts. I'm sure you could get a result at least as good as the OEM cans you used to see on ZX-7Rs.

A mate of mine made one out of an old washing machine for his FZR. And that was definitely loud enough! Use scrap steel and ally and paint it with high-temperature paint from your local auto parts store. THe result will probably be lighter than the TRX cans, plus you'll have intact original cans.
