Couple of Noob questions

Hi all,

had the TRX for a month or so now and beginning to get to know my way around it. Commuting 40k each way in traffic sure helps to accelerate the process! Have a couple of queries that I could do with some help on if I may:

The temperature never seems to get up very high. This worries me as the thermostat should open around 95C, but I've only ever seen 80C on the dial and that was when stationary in traffic. This might be ok if the temp sensor is downstream from the thermostat, but nfg if on the head side. Can anyone advise? My guess is someone's removed the thermostat for some reason... Not the easiest thing to get to, so I want to make sure before I start investigating.

Secondly, I finally got to have a fang in the country over the weekend (while the footy was on) and didn't find the seat too comfortable. Every bump ended up being painful towards the end (barely 100k from start) wondered if the compression damping was set too hard. Can anyone give me some suspension settings to start from? I weigh about 80kG, with gear add another say 8 to 10 kilos or so.

Otherwise, I'm a pretty happy camper. Just love the torque. So much easier to overtake and work the twisties without requiring endless gearchanges.

Hi Dave, and welcome.

A noob advise, try the search function, it's all been covered over and over. Temperature is not a problem, all TRX:s show around 65-70 degrees while driving. As for rear suspension, first get Your rear sag right, i.e. set the bike to compress ca 30-40 mm (from fully expanded spring) with You and full gear on. Set the pre-load correctly, then start fiddling with compression and re-bound.

as said, the temperature sounds good to me, they don't run hot at all.

Apparently the best way to make the seat comfortable is to have it re-moulded, to take out the section that tapers up and in.

The reason that it is uncomfortable is more tan likley due to shagged suspesnion and not the seat (I have covered over 500 miles in a day on mine and been ok ish)

The rear will have no damping left and you can bet that the fork oil has never been changed

Yeah I did try the search function Hans, and the response it came back with on the temperature issue didn't fill me with confidence. I went through the Haynes manual as well, but couldn't find any reference to what the 'normal' running temperature was, nor whether the temp sensor was upstream (typical for a car) or downstream of the thermostat, so please understand that I really wanted a bit more light thrown on this subject. I can only conclude that it's downstream (radiator side) which is pretty useless for determining if the bike's up to working temp or not.

The suspension settings - well I've reset them to what's described as 'normal' in the user's manual and will start working my way from there. The rebound was set very much on the Hard side, likewise the compression, although the preload was correct. Phuk72, you really think the suspension's rooted after only 35,000k? I would have thought it would be lacking in damping if so???

Thanks again for the help guys. Much appreciated. Hate the brain 'running in' period you have with a new bike. Always feel like every single problem is a great disaster well hidden by the previous owner. Much lost sleep in the early days of new ownership.

I commute on my bike every day and think the seat is generally hard and wide, now i have a sheep skin cover which makes it ok

Re Water temp gauge

Operating temperature of the fan is from 105 deg +or - 3 deg down to 98 deg.

You will find that the gauge rarely moves much off the stop unless its really warm or you are puttering around town.
