Screeching clutch...

Post by Greg » Tue Sep 16, 2008 11:32 pm

Yeah I know it;s been covered, but I haven't seen any posts about it recently so I thought I'd do the nasty...

We've probably all heard it, does it hurt the cluth and is there a way of shutting it up?

From what I remember reading it is a slight oil starving of the inner clutch plates. There is somewhere on the web a page that shows a modifcation you can do to the clutch basket to help oil get in. Holes that allow better pick up of oil. Does it cause damage? I can't remember what the comment was on that. I would hazard a guess though that something that was designed to be run with oil and isn't would be getting some damage.

Edit: I know this is refering to a newer bike but I am pretty sure it is the same issue.....

I've done this mod and, while it makes things a little better, it doesn't cure the problem....

EDIT

Hmm.. now i know after reading a bit. TRX basket doesnt even have the 3 holes that others have. It has 6 for the springs / shoulder bolts. Could be an interesting mod.
Id like more pics of the ring he made to bolt on. The link for that one image isnt working. Further investigation. Im quite interested in doing it tho.

Hi Greg!

Despite Killer read the German forum carefully (the screaming clutchwas - again - a topic there only last week) he forgot ( :?: ) to post the Yamaha letter which discloses the reason for the clutch to scream:

Link to the hosted picture

>>(This picture should be seen for about 3 months till it expires ...)<< This is not valid anymore ... see below (Edit: ...).

OK, I know you lot are not particular good in reading (and understanding) German :) 8) ... so I'll translate the most important things:

Problem: Screaming clutch noise at quick starting
Reason: The coupling package (friction disks and thrust plates) is stimulated to resonance vibration which causes this noise.
The correct functioning is not affected ...
Remedy: ... friction plates with part no. 3FV-16321-01 (9 pieces) should be installed and the clutch hub should be modified according to the instructions and the ddrawing.
Annotation: The different structure of the surface of the friction disks and the 3 additional oil drillings (diameter 2 mm) result in an additional oil supply of this region.
...

@ honkdawillydahonk:
So it is not enough to drill the holes - other fricition disks should also be used.

Informating greetings from Munich!

Edit: Hosted the working instructions anew - they wont disappear now (at least as long as the hoster and/or the internet exists ... )

I did a pretty hard launch in town today and it was screaming like a banshee. Might have to look at actually doing this mod. Might even photo document it for others to ponder.
