Anyone removed balance shafts recently?

Post by TRiXy » Sun Jul 20, 2008 11:09 am

My bike has been making some not so nice noises lately, at first i thought it was the water pump, but lately i've been starting to think it might be one of the balance shafts... we pulled the cover off the water pump, and with out acctually removing the pump shaft, we couldn't see any unusual movement (some axial movement, but nothing radial) so i've been doing some looking and the balance shafts don't lookl like a very nice task to remove... I've been looking through the manual, but i'm a little unclear on the process... from what i can gather, it's an engine out, head & bores off, and case splitting kinda job or is it less complicated then that? Has anyone done the job recently? any tips?
Current Rides:
2010 YZF-R1 - Stock, but still awesome.
1995 Import Spec TRX - Yoshi Pipes & Jet Kit

I only know of one guy who is an OLD (not that he is old but only the old bikes) triumph freak, he took all balancers out of his insanely turbo´ed parallell twin.
Worked a charm and he is running it road, longtrips, trackdays @ ~150hp

you cannot remove the balancers without splitting the cases. You may be able to change the bearings with the motor in one lump though - they would exit from the left hand side.

I dunno if i'm willing to try taking them out, and leaving them out... though I have wondered just how much of a difference they'd make...

it sounds like the kinda job i'm gonna have to spends lots of time doing... :-(
