Mixture or Valve clearance issue

Post by Steve » Sun Jul 06, 2008 12:20 am

It's another one of those pesky carb threads.

Briefish history:
Original carbs had shot tubes/needles, 5000mile pair acquired from the bay of E and have been fine, six months ago bike off the road, had carbon cans with db killers and was fine, meanwhile acquired nice shiny Carbon Can Co zorsts with baffly bit still in.

Last two days i've been feckin about trying to get the bugger running right with these CCC cans and will it shite as like run proper, even gone back to the standard 10ton cans and still it's a gutless wonder
Starting & idling seem pretty good, then you try pull away - needs a handful of throttle and a gentle slippy clutch - bit better when going but nowhere near what it should be or was.

Initially the mixture was suspect as it stunk of petrol - mate behind me said he was getting another 20 to the gallon cos of my fumes! (shoulda charged him) so started fiddling with the carbys and the mix screw, gone between 2- 2.5 turns out and still gutless, stripped carbs and found bugger all, checked floats @ 12mm but shifted em up a bit to 14mm, next to zilch needle/tube wear.

managed to get to 60mph in 3rd and that was about it

So what have i missed ??

Ok so i found out what was missing - One Cylinder!!, started it up and sat with hand on downpipe! for 10 secs on the left 1 for 30 secs on the right 1, AH HA thinks me tis only running on one bloody cylinder! so i suppose getting only 60 in 3rd was about right for half the engine.

Whipped the plugs out and right hand 1 tells me where my oil is going  not quite as bad as it sounds as while it was off the road i was starting at least once a month and I never noticed no.2 was not running - so the oil that eventually fouled the plug i'm assuming is seeping in via the valve seals.

Anyways now she's back to normal and ready for some hooning around :D well just got to refit the Cabon Can Co thingys tomorrow and see if i need to do yet more fettling

might be a good idea to change your oil as all that unburnt petrol may well have fecked the oil

Have contemplated that but the amount of petrol that was coming out i could have had an afterburner  smoked like a train for a while when i fired up with both plugs firing, kinda impressed with how well it ran on 1 cylinder though.

dumped some oil to check and it seemed fine so just topped it up yeah i know not exactly scientific but it does get through a bit, if i didn't top up I'd not need to change the oil after 2-3 months cos there'd probably be bugger all left i think, so looks like I'll be collecting ye olde valve seals etc in due course and doing some more pulling about  but that can wait till after the summer [-o< pfft!
