i just had to pull my motor down again.
when replacing my head i did not pull the barrels as i did not think i had moved them. when i started it back up i found oil in the water.

pulled it down today. was quite happy with my self. i timed it and from complete bike to barrels off, was 1hour 50min.
but when i looked at the base gasket it appers it is coated in a type of paint/sealant. i must have moved the barrels and this paint moved on the gasket and created patches where the paint was removed or thick. this aloud oil and water to mix.

for the sake of 20quid i should have just replaced it.

As per other thread i had tears coming out in the rear of cyl1, rather than taking any chances i sprayed the gasket with loctite 3020 and it seems ok now!
....it´s a little pink here and there though....

i dont use any thing on head gaskets, the trx is a steelshim gasket. the black stuff on it is a type of glue. when you torque it down and start running it, the glue sets and binds the whole lot togeather. very clean surfaces and the correct torque is all that should be needed.

back home i used to sell performance V8 engine bits, heads, cranks, rods ect to engine builders for race motors. very few reconditioners would recomend any thing. the gaskets normaly have that black glue or beads of rubber that should do the job.

I don't use anything on any of the gaskets. Never had a problem with them.

got the bike back togeather on sat night. like i said just cleaned every thing up. i even used a large flat block and some 800 w&d to get every thing extra clean. worked a treat. she purrs like a cat.

did you lap the valves in ? if so what effect did it have on the shims?

no i did not pull the valves out so they did not require laping.
