black end cans

Post by heanoid » Sun Apr 06, 2008 11:33 am

fitted beowulf end cans to my 98 TRX, and they have sooted up the end of the cans, pulls quite well but at the top end i can't seem to get above 120 ish (i know there is more to come) not had time to pull out the plugs yet, on the previous standard cans it was slightly sooty..black dried stuff but not as bad , i was thinking of having a dynojet kit fitted, but have heard this could make it worse, and wear out the emulsion tubes quicker, (could anyone also explain what these are and how and why they wear out and how they could affect the bikes performance)...confused at the minute as to what to do..but very enthusiastic...love these TRX things ,looks ,sounds, exclusivity, any help or comments appreciated

You will see soot on the tailpipe with modern fuels. It's no indication of mixture any more.

What gearing are you running?

What revs are you at for 120mph?

Could just be a blocked air filter.

DJ kit will not wear your carbs any quicker than stock needles. although many moons ago they could.

The emulsion tube is also known as the needle jet. It is a brass tube down the middle of the carb that the needle slides through. The slides rattle in the carbs (I believe due to the angle at which they sit?) causing the needle to rattle in the emulsion tube. So the tube wears. Eventually it will wear to an extent that the needle cannot meter fuel accurately at small throttle openings, so you get very rich running at low revs.

Your emulsion tubes could be worn already. The only way to find out is to open the carbs up and have a look.

Kedo sell them for much less than FP or Straightline. I wouldn't bother with the needles, but there's no harm in changing them.

ordered some from kedo then its going into the 'shop' to have these dropped in along with the dynojet and rolling road set up you get new needles with the kit, whilst im on do trx 's suffer from any known gearbox problems on my old (admittedly shagged out )chain it kept jumping out of gear ,usually 2nd back into neutral and also top gear back down to fourth, just fitted new chain and sprockets tightened to perfection, after one week i think the chain has settled down and had its bedding in stretch so to speak and is a little loose and tonight on the way home couldn't keep the bloody thing in gear!!!
never had any chain problems like this on any other bike iv'e owned(all in line fours ) thoughts please

dropping out of gear is nowt to do with your chain. sounds like either there are some worn or broken dogs on the gears or the shift drum or forks are badly worn.

I happen to have a complete gearbox sat in my garage if you need one.........................

why not fit the emulsion tubes yourself and save a few quid?

you can do the tubes yourself,,, but you do have a far bigger problem and that's your gearbox , and if its jumping out like you say you will have to get it fixed .. as much as anything its just not safe ,, and yes the engine has to come out and the cases split to do this job ,, sorry i know this is not want you want to here but it has to be done, or sell it as is and get something else

just wanted to add that the gearbox I have is in the cases, with the clutch. Makes the job much easier than changing the gearbox itself. If you want it, of course.

is there any way of tellng 100% if the gearbox needs attention or does it have to be stripped to find out, if so does any one know anywere in the northwest that could do the job, don't think me and the haynes are up to it. is this a "yamaha thing" (gearbox probs) heard of or know a few peoplewho have had box problems (YZFthundercat-fazer etc )

is it a Yamaha thing? no - it's an abuse thing. low oil or crashing are good causes of poor lubrication in the gearbox. I've had 6 TRX's and TDM's and none of them had a bad gearbox.

You'd have to split the engine to check th eshift drum and forks. Do you have a healthy gear lever action?

If you want to remove your engine and bring it to me I'll take your crank and top end and fit them onto a set of cases with a good gearbox and clutch. It will take a few days though, as you'd need to order new main bearing shells. This is the easiest and cheapest option - it will involve the least amount of labour.

Bear in mind that gaskets will cost you £100, plus whatever parts whoever needs to buy.

I have a gasket set here, with the gearbox in the cases. You would need £30 worth of main bearing shells to do it my way. I'll do it for you for £120 labour - call it £350 all in. If you can find someone to do it cheaper i'll be very surprised, amazed even. I'll even re-shim your valves for you.
