How much transmission slop is too much???

Post by TRiXy » Sun Mar 30, 2008 1:58 am

Hey guys, been concerned about the transmission slop in my bike for a while now, but i haven't been able to find any information indicating just how much is too much?? i had the chain off last night and i can turn the front sprocket about 1 full pitch of the sprocket either way, so that's about 1/16th of a turn... in my opinion that's way too much, but i'm not used to these bikes... when you turn it, it feels just like the clearance between 2 gears is way out... like there's just too much play, not as though there's a busted bearing and it's pushing a shaft around. there no noticable horizontal or vertical play in the shaft... only when you rotate it...

anyone able to help??/

that's worse then finding out that it's a problem but i can fix it... if this is normal, then does everyone have noticable transmissino shudder when they're riding? mainly on the change from decelleration (1st or 2nd gear) to light accelleration??

is this with the bike in gear? or in neutral?

sprocket turns freely when it's in neutral... when it's in gear you can rotate it quite a bit (1/16th of a full turn).

I'd suggest it's backlash in the clutch then.

where in the clutch? is there a common weakness? centre spline? basket ring gear? i'm not familiar with the setup in these...

I'd say that the amount of backlash you describe isn't too much. It's a lumpy twin and can be a bit of a rocking horse when riding as you describe in your earlier post.

regardless of engine configuration, that amount of backlash is excessive... perhaps not for manufacture specs, but surely there's no reason why it couldn't have been made tighter in the factory... even my old XJ was better in this regard, the sloppiest thing about that was the chain, which is easily adjusted...

I'd say engine configuration plays a huge part in this "transmission shudder" and tbh think you're concerned over nothing. I've found that these things don't like an on/off type throttle operation, particularly in the lower gears, without slipping the clutch alot.

Maybe it's something you become used to?

yeah, i'd agree the engine config might play a part in the shudder, but not behind the reaon why there is so much slop in the front sprocket... regardless of whether it's a chunky dirt single or a valkryie 6 they should be able to get that slop down to a relatively small tollerance. i mean, even if it was overly tight, you've got the cushdrive rubbers to give it some freedom...

i'm starting to get used to the clutch, at first i couldn't bring myself to slip it as much as it appears to need... but i'm now getting used to it.
