Sprocket Selection Questoins - rider + pillion

Post by TRiXy » Sun Mar 16, 2008 10:45 pm

G'day all,

Got a question RE sprocket selection... i'm currently running a 17-41 combo, and i believe standard is 17-39. so far i've found my setup to be struggling to get off the line with myself and a passenger, and it doesn't like cruising 60. 80 and 100k's are all done at just under 3000rpm... i've found that if i can keep the revs over 3K then all is sweet, but under 3K and she gets the shakes... that's the bike gets the shakes, not the passenger... but the worst problem is just getting off the line, it takes plenty of revs, and lots of clutch...

Question is, what sprocket setups are other people running with rider + pillion? I've been thinking 16-42 would take care of my problems, maybe even 17-44...

any suggestions?

getting off the line as you say is a bit tricky ,i too have to slip the clutch a fair bit ,,first gear is very tall on these bikes ,also they do not like running below 3000 rpm that's just the nature of the beast ,,i did try a 16/42 and it was a lot better off the line but would only go to 120 mph before it ran out of steam ,,, not sure trx is the best at two up riding

as steeve speed said... doesn't help the off the line starts... changing down a gear takes the revs from just a touch under 3000rpm to close to 3500rpm... and that just feels excessive for a comfortable cruise...

i agree that double up isn't ideal, but until i can find the missus a bike of her own, i'm afraid i have no choice...

I've got a 16 on the front and a 42 or 43 on the rear (I bought it like that), and it's doing just shy of 4k rpm at 100kph. It does make it quite handy for rolling through the delightful stopped traffic that I ride in on Ipswich Road every day though! Not sure on top end, I've seen 190ish with it still pulling before it developed a head shake and scared the crap out of me. It's stock with a K&N and a full Yoshi Titan system on it.

thanks for the suggestions guys...

think i'm gonna go for a lower gear setup... atleast until my missus has her own bike.. then i'll re-assess... bit concerned about the 4000rpm @ 100'ks though... that's definatly higher then i'd like to see... might just drop the ratios a little bit...
