Crankcase breather filter....

Hmmm..
Okay - this filter. When I did my FCRs I got a set of KayanEnne pod filters too, but obviously nowhere to plug the breather into. I ended up using the TRX in-line filters from the old carb CV vent tubes in series then jammed between the filters..
Now... the crankcase breather filter is exactly what it says, it filters the air that is 'breathed' by the crankcase. You have to bear in mind that the atmosphere inside the crankcases is alternately pressurised then de-pressurised with each rise and fall of the pistons. If that high frequency pressure fluctuation were to be effectively sealed withing the confines of the crankcases, then eventually something would fail be it a gasket or other pressure sensitive component. Allowing the crankcase to vent to open atmosphere in this way solves the problem.
Depending on how you look at it, there's an argument that if your breather pipe is long enough, then effectively there's a point at which it's the same air that's being shunted up and down the pipe (you'll have to think about that one!) but personally, I'm in favour of filtering and am still looking for a way of venting the breather into a filter pod without f*cking it up. That said, with my current arrangement there's always that delicious smell of hot oil that wafts up from between my legs after a good hard ride...
