How far will it go...?

Post by Greg » Wed Oct 31, 2007 10:10 am

Here's a thing, my motor's done about 40k miles, and I was wondering how much further it's likely to be able to go?

I know engine life is dependant on many things, but decent oil and maintenance makes a huge difference...

So - who's got the highest mileage??

Mines an Import. It had done 21 ks when I got it (oh really, 8 years old and 21 ks, I dont think so)
It has now done 52ks and still does not use oil, and runs real good still. I got the valves done at 42ks and the mechanic said that he would have thought that the bike would, at that time, have done about 60ks true Kilometres
I use a local blend of oil (P.M.) and change the oil and filter every 4000ks aprox.

Should probably list other engines I've owned as well then:

At 26,000 miles my last engine threw a rod (as far as I am aware this is the only instance of rod failure and probably caused by running it for 120 miles on one cyliner)

Another engine lasted 17,000 before big end failure (I acquired this broken due to ol starvation). Aside from bearings, internals were perfect.

Bought another engine with over 40k on it to purge for bits - in truth it was too good to break

TRX 31,000 miles - 2,000miles since i bought it, uses 1litre oil per 800-1000miles
TDM 43,000 miles - 24,000miles in 2years, uses 1litre oil per 2000miles
XTZ 25,000 miles-ish - 6,000miles in 6months, uses 1litre oil per 4000miles (but had some kind of rebuild by previous owner at 18k miles)

they all burn various amounts of oil
i just keep them topped up with decent oil and service regularly

i also have a 3VD (mk1 TDM) engine that i'm about to rebuild, thats only got 13,000miles on it, but has a fooked output shaft
i'm keeping a rebuild blog on Carpe-TDM, i'll post up a link for anyone thats interested.

i know of atleast 3 mk2 TDM engines (same as trx 4un) that have over 100k miles on them, so dont start worrying yet
as long as you keep it topped up with oil ......... the TRX seat will kill you before the engine dies

1997 model,83,356 kms .Still uses no oil. I had the shims checked at 25,000 and didn't need any. Replaced the water pump and thats it. Doesn't rattle at all and still pulls hard. Starts easily. Good oil changed regularly is the key. Plus i ran the bike in correctly. I expect to get at least 150,000 before major work needs doing (touch wood).
1999 track bike 40,000+ kms .Still runs sweetly, starts well. Regularly gets bounced off the limiter  Time will tell.
If everything seems under control
your just not going fast enough.

The new owner, who is still registrated on the Dutch TRX topic, has done about 152.000km so far.... that I know

i know an 99 R1 which did 104k before he did the head (shims / valve guides, but kept the valves / cams / chain).. go figure.

mines done close to 50k now, never done anything cept oil and plugs (on this engine) but the carbie emulsion tubes are shot.. otherwise its fine.

Ditto on the "no oil".. mates used to burn HEAPS.. and only did 35k on it. Then he sold it.

Know a guy who did 198.000 km with his S10. Oke its not a Rex but the enginebase is the same except for the crank.
