brake calipers

Post by boyso20 » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:05 pm

my trx has the brembo calipers. i still find that the stopping power isnt great.
is there a noticeable difference between r6 calipers and the brembo's?

Yes - like night and day.

I would also change to braided hoses (and you may want to consider an R1 or R6 master cylinder as well)

As long as the are not radial calipers, they will fit (and yes it is a straight bolt on).

they also fitted blue spots (which also come as gold spots and now silver spots!) to the R1, R6, fazer, thunderace etc.

Ebay is your best bet - expect to pay £50 - £70 plus postage. It may be worth holding out for a complete front set up. You should be able to get calipers, braided hoses and mc for £100.

I would echo the sentiment about replacing the master cylinder too.

The R6/R1 calipers give you better brakes, but the master cylinder gives you a much better feel with the new set-up and is easily worth the extra few notes.

I paid something like £80 for a complete system on Ebay. (I already had calipers so I sold them on to another TRXer). My calipers cost me IRO £40. They are abundant so don't pay too much. If looking in Ebay look under other Yamaha bikes, like Fazer and V-max.

Brake lines are different at the caliper end, although the TRX items can be used (I think) - it's probably worth investing in new lines anyway

Go for the R6/1 master cylinder option. I've got one waiting in the wings. Currently I'm still using the TRX m/c and feels powerful but very wooden, with not much feel. Will put the new one on next time I flush the system.

experience says (personal)

1: new brakes = 50%

2: new lines = 35%

3: new pistons / levers / things on your handle bars = 15%

full combo = 100% BETTER increase in performance.

note: im a drunken aussie.. but quote me on that.... NOT !!!!

brake calipers

im a drunken aussie too..

at the moment i could pull the trx up quicker by sticking my boot on the rear wheel, so if i can get 100% improvement on the current braking situation, i'll give up beer for a month to pay for it!

i live in the uk now, but still drink like an aussie!

i've got my eye on a complete brake system from an 01 r1.
calipers, lines and mc.
is this suitable for the trx?
does any yr fit?

As far as I know, all 'blue spots' and the later 'gold spots' will fit. '01 R1 will be fine, but check the length of the brake lines: R1 ones may be shorter?

Hey Phuk, it keeps 'em passive: it's the sober ones you gotta watch out for!

i switched the calipers for blue spots off an R6. even with the original hoses and MC the difference is astounding. the brakes were my biggest gripe initially and the only mods the brakes need now is better suspension
maybe then i'll start thinking R1 MC and braided hoses (although, personally, i prefer the feel of rubber lines)

I'm running blue spots from a '98 R1, braided hoses front and rear and a TRX (front) m/c (overhauled). Good braking, slightly wooden but can't complain...at least I can stop now, unlike before I changed the calipers!

And yes, the blue spots bolt straight on. No messing around - even I can do it!!! :)
