carbs stripped and cleaned out with steam and then a vinegar solution and an ultrasonic cleaner.
they were pretty gummed up from being stood for a lot of years unused.
going to put them back on see if the engine picks up ok.
then its a full bike strip down and start chopping stuff up!

carbs built back up now, went with the stock suggested settings from a thread on here for the slow air and fuel screws.
bike starts and picks up really good now.
very happy. On to the next job - chopping the back end off and fitting the fireblade rear race seat unit!
pics to follow

ok. time to put some pictures to this thread.
FCRs cleaned inside and out:

Now that the bike runs we turned our attention to the back end. I have had a devastating case of man flu the last fortnight so progress was slow, but we are back on it now.
back end chopped off:

fabricated a more sturdy mounting point for the rear subframe:

Welded in place and subframe pushed over:

Needs a little dressing up once the bike is stripped down but its strong enough for now.
holes drilled and the lower subframe mounts mocked up:

its a 2012 Honda fireblade rear end. it came with my fireblade track bike and I nearly binned it, as it was one of those things that would sit and take up space for 6 year then eventually get chucked. thankfully my dad gets profit from it.
We have it roughly in place. its much taller than the stock trx seat unit, but it give a more modern look and ergonomics.

Thats a good looking rear end you have there...
Oh, and congratulations on surviving man flu, every time I get it, its terminal.

Sounds like we've got very similar projects on the go. Mine was raced in the old BMCRC singles, twins and triples class back in '98 and '99 by a chap called Trevor Powell before being put on the road in '00. By coincidence I was racing a TZR250 at the time, and we quite often got gridded with the singles twins and triples. Looking at the scrutineering stickers on the fairing of the TRX, it's clear that it was being raced at the same meetings I was at, so there's every chance I've raced against the bike that's now in my garage.coxylaad wrote:at this moment in time I wont be changing any jets for setup.
the bike was a raced and won in the Bemsee thunderbikes series many year ago so i am sure it will be right.
it just needs to be clean and serviced.
It's in a bit of a state to be honest. Engine is currently sitting on the garage floor waiting for a new gearbox to be fitted. Head is up on the bench being treated to some new shims, and a clean-up. FCR41s sitting next to the head to be cleaned up and looked at. Tank full of rust. Frame needs stripping, repainting, and a bit of welding one one of the coil mounts. Doubtless the forks and shock will need a total rebuild as well. Shouty Renegade exhaust will need repacking.
Lots to do. Should keep me out of trouble for the winter.

Starting to post a few updates and pictures on https://nronketti.wordpress.com/ - I've also got a some more photos in a Facebook album, https://www.facebook.com/neil.ronketti/ ... 6260860373 which I'm pretty sure is set for public access. I really need to get the wordpress site updated!coxylaad wrote:

Re: TRX 2 - The tuned 850 one!
Just looking ahead on this project, we are going to purchase an ignitech ignition unit for it at some point over the winter.
The benefits
Custom map of ignition profile to match to modifications
Quickshifter function
Shift light function
User settable rev limiter
For those reasons alone make it worth it to me, however having looked into I can see there is a couple of 'traction control' options where you can set a maximum allowable acceleration of the engine, and when it exceeds that you can set it to A) switch to a retarded ignition map, or B) cut the ignition completely.
In addition to this it has 2 pin outs - one to switch to the retarded map, and the other to kill the ignition.
Can someone with the ignitech unit confirm this? cobba?
My plan is to use an arduino to measure the wheel speed sensors, and use that to make the decision whether to switch to retarded ignition map or kill the ignition by on ground the pin outs on the ignitech.
The logic of the arduino will measure the wheel speeds, if the slip ratio goes above the threshold but the rate of change is slow we can get the arduino to engage or 'pulse' the retarded ignition map. the the rate of change is great then it will pulse an ignition kill to get it back under normall parameters.
this is all theory in my head but if the ignitech works in the way I think it does it will be sound theory.
any comments welcome. and of course if I get a working prototype that I am happy with I will happily share it with the group

Re: TRX 2 - The tuned 850 one!
Those last functions where from the now obsolete racing 3 units and are only available now under special order, mostly use for those running nitrous... (2 maps.. race start and main map)
Traction control software you MAY??? already find in their fuel injected units which cost around $1000 but don't quote me on that as I've never had the opportunity to play with 1 yet.
Traction control for a TRX... = choice of tyre and pressure and choice of gear/gearing.
It's only a trx and even if you find 100hp+ and a versatile torque curve it's an easy demon to control.
If your chasing more midrange not outright HP your still only shifting your peak down around around 1500rpm lower. Get things working together and you'll hold peak torque over 1500-2000rpm range.
You can always tune the geometry to run a wider 5.5" 180-190 rear end.
Over racing got around traction control by running a 6" rear wheel .
You'll more than likely find better lap times looking into lighter weight wheels than what you'll gain from traction control on the std lead weights.
1 bonus when fitting 05/6 R6 on wards front end . I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to retrofit the later model 5.5" lighter R6 wheel into the TRX swing arm. I managed it pretty easily with a 5.5" yzf750 rear wheel previously that Udaysen now has.
Even though traction control would be an interesting project and sounds like you enjoy a challenge...
