Clutch Change

Still discovering all the nuances of my new bike, noticed this morning that the clutch cable is on its maximum adjustment, the clutch doesn't slip yet so nothing to worry about yet. Just wondering what changing the clutch is like on these engines; I think its a fairly standard 850 lump, original to the bike 1997 model on about 35,000 miles. I'm wondering if its worth doing the job now whilst its summer as workshop space is limited, as I'll be commuting a 40 mile daily trip so the miles soon add up.

Is the standard clutch the best option or are there any improvements to be made by fitting an alternative?

145,000km on the original clutch when I did my rebuild and had very little wear.
I find the clutch pretty light on the Trx and usually have an easy 5mm play (slack)in the lever before even looking at the clutch starting to disengage.
Play with the adjustment at the lever as a number of TRX's I've ridden have there clutch wound right up and by the time you pull it in to the handlebar your fighting hard against the springs.

I am with Brian here, checked mine during re-build snd found very little wear, I did try an EBC Kevlar racing clutch when I tuned the engine, but really hated the abrupt grabby take up, so went back to standard item - no problems

the trx clutch is probably a fair bit stronger than it needs to be,

If anything I would expect the cable has stretched

Is the adjustment fully out on the lever and on the cable down by the oil pipe?

Hi Paul,

Had another look at it this morning, there's still a bit of adjustment at the gearbox end and the clutch really doesn't feel like its on the way out, given that the bike has only just clicked around to 35,000 (miles) I'll take it that there's plenty of life left in the original!
