A bolt is only threaded for part of it's length, whilst the thread on a screw continues all the way to the head.

bingo.. we have a winner..
Double or nothing ..
So why not just thread all bolts to the head and just call them screws..

Long time ago now but is it issues with fit and strength where a bolt passes through 2 plain holes and into a nut and a screw is more general purpose often into a threaded hole?

Also if you are making a million bolts it's quicker and cheaper just to thread the necessary part rather than the whole length.

I do remember the maxim 'every nut deserves a washer'.

Cheers, Andy.

Set screws are not bolts   and are only used to secure an item to a shaft or spline, the tip/cone of the set screw bites into the shaft for a tight fit :D

Interesting but not where I come from. What you talk about Rod is a grubscrew up here

A setscrew is threaded to the end a bolt isn't. 8)

Yep, there are often two "correct" names for an item, one being the engineering name and one the common name. Set Screw is the correct engineering name and Grub Screw (because it looks like a small grub) is the common name :D

Edit, I've also hear them called "blind head screws" 8-[

I always call them dome nuts. I do remember my late Father (an engineer), once informed me the proper name is a "crown hex" nut. Close? :dontknow:
