Good Engine Builder Around Brisbane?

Post by johno440 » Thu Nov 15, 2012 5:52 am

Ok I just got myself a 878cc big bore kit, stuck my hand for the 1mm oversize valve group buy, custom cams ordered & 41mm FCR's still to come.

Now just a need a trusted engine rebuilder in the Brisbane area to screw it altogether and balance/blueprint/ported & all gas flowed.

Can anyone recommend anyone?

Hey Johnno.

Unfortunately I cant recommend anyone, just warn you off some I have gone through over the years... mainly Brisbane Motorcycles (who have dealt with me and a couple of my mates terribly) and I know team moto ashgrove and marooka are not so great. I have heard good things about GrandPrix on the southside but havent tried them myself. I'd be keen to know who you end up going with and what you thought of them. Have been trying to track down a mechanic in bris with intimate TRX knowledge for sometime.

Hi found a good bloke recommended by guy at work who land speed races a Ducati. John Coonan and works for Bayside Yamaha. He looks after lots of race bike and cars powered by bike engines. He has also done TRX racing development in the past. Other performance shops such as Tighe Cams have also told me in good hands with him as none better in Brissy.

Nice find/recommendation johno. I'd be interested in your feedback on service and workmanship. Bayside Yamaha is my local dealer. I've never used them for mechanical work but the recommendations given to you sound promising.

If anyone can track down Steve Nichol give him a try. Last I heard he was living at Logan valley after he moved up from Sydney a decade ago. He was brilliant. Head spanner at cycle city hurstville & ex aust ducati race mechanic. Also built his own race engines. did have a mobile van but gave up the van after moving up here as it was taking too long for word to get around.

I'll let u know how I go with john Coonan at Bayside Yamaha. So far all good. He does all the race stuff on the side at home I think. I know he now also does a lot off speedway and superbikes also and all the performance inshops in Brisbane know of him. The guy doing my head Geoff Chesterton is apparently one of the best in Australia and used teach air flow dynamics at universities and has his own flow bench and equipment at home.

Hi Cobba

Geoff Chesterton doing the head in collaboration with John Coonan who is doing rest of the engine. I'll keep you updated how it all goes and the new recommended cam specs. On a side, I've also been in contact with Takai Coils in the USA who will do a coil on plug similar to superbikes, but not cheap - with leads it comes to around $750 but they have gauranteed at least 5HP across the rev range increase as well as increase in torque.

http://www.takai-racing.com/main/ignition_coils.htm

Just waiting on the valves before can go any further now.

On a side note, as this engine is getting pretty serious now do you think Carrillo rods would be needed as read here that sometimes stock ones let go? I'm lookign at increasing the rev limit to about 9,500rpm. Other alternative is race prepare the standard ones (balanced, shot peened, resized + ARP rod bolts if available).

Cust past from http://www.racecarid.com/wiki/McCo ... b_Race_Car of race these guys do:

"Power:
A Suzuki 1984 EFE motorcycle engine was found and given to Geofery Chesterton to turn into a race engine. Very little of the original engine remains, with lots of aftermarket goodies including billet Falicon Crank, Falicon Rods, JE pistons, Big block, extensivly mofified Suzuki GSXR750 Head, MoTec injected on Methanol fuel. MoTec Queensland set up the MoTec and tuned the car. PM Lubricants (Eco oils) are the only oils and grease used on the car. The result is an extremly relaiable motor with over 200hp at the wheels. The motor is now looked after by John Coonan."
