Provided there's no pressure on the fork bottoms which might be shortening them, then it's generally a matter of applying sufficient force to allow the threads to engage. Done it a few times without any issues.

Tealman,The fork itself is stuck in the leg. Measured it against the complete one and is a good six inches shorter so something is holding it as I cannot get it to pull back up. Thanks for your reply. Kenbev.
