Rear caliper re-spray

Post by Planx » Sat May 02, 2015 10:51 am

Having been forced by a badly dragging rear brake to split and overhaul the caliper, I thought I might go the whole hog and re-spray it as well. Can anyone recommend what to strip the old paint with and what to use for the respray?

Hi I would be inclined to just rough up the existing paint with wire wool & paint over the top. I'm no expert but to remove all the paint back to the alloy would be a mistake as alloy needs a acid primer etch under coat to stop the paint from peeling as paint reacts to alloy & just peels off. Hope this is of help.

Hi Dulaeng,
Ok, I wasn't aware of that. Unfortunately, one corner of the caliper has been scraped on the road - not hard but down to the metal - and I was hoping to smooth that as part of the respray. I'll have to take into account your point about the primer and do some research. Thanks for you response.
