Petrol leak

Post by burnrubberallday » Tue Apr 12, 2011 2:34 pm

Hi all ,my petrol tap is leaking slightly
it is leaking at the elbow ,under the actuall on off tap.
the part which the petrol pipe fix,s to tap unit,
then the pipe fits to the petrol pump.
this elbow swivels easily in the fuel tap body, and is easily pulled out of the main body.
the elbow has a groove around the part that fits into the main body.no seal in at present
does this have a rubber seal ,or is the elbow supposed to be a fixed item.
thanks

Theres no seal, just a tight-push-fit pipe with a metal clip round it on the outside.

Sounds like you have SPD: Sloppy Pipe Disease!

If this is the leak definitely (and its not somewhere above ie the tap and running down to this point as its the lowest) then you can buy rubber fuel pipe from any motorbike shop or off ebay.

Are you talking about the metal spigot on the tap body or the actual fuel hose?
I don`t believe if it`s the metal spigot of the tap that it should move at all!
Obviously, if it does then it`s a complete strip down and a very good clean that is required, then braze or plastic metal to fix it. Alternatively replace the tap altogether.

If it is the metal 90 degree part that comes out of the bottom of the fuel tap, this should be a very tight fit with an O ring on it to stop fuel leaking out.

Silver solder `might` work but to get it to flow into the joint it`ll have to be meticulously clean. Oh and strip down the WHOLE tap, there`s an O ring inside.

I too have this same issue. I have been through the different pages since this was written and other sources.

It appears there was no o rig present at the top of the L shaped elbow from the fuel tap. The grove does not run fully around. Fuel is clearly leaking from this point with bike running.

After removal, fuel gum was present indicating a long term issue. Looking for a product like locktite or similar to seal this elbow stem.

Going on a long trip in a few days. Ideas of a product that is fuel resistant through your experience is appreciated.

When I dismantled the fuel tap on my parts bike, there was a seal in the groove, it was not an o'ring, but some other type of material.
On my riding bike I have used JB weld, from Jaycar, as it claims to be fuel resistant, this is an epoxy material, so you need to orient the elbow correctly before applying.
No further leaks there so far.

There is no O-ring in the junction of the spigot to the main tap body.
There never was.
It is a very tight fit and glued into place.
If you put enough pressure on the spigot you can make it turn.
You will then have a fuel leak as you have broken the adhesive that hold the spigot in place.
Either JB weld or similar to glue it back together, or buy a better fuel tap.

I just bash mine up with a hammer (lightly) and I've never had a leak.
Last time I removed the tank I put a bit of Loctite on it. Still don't have a leak. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

JB welded mine. Found out the leaking was actually coming from the little hole in the white gasket in the centre? that I guess holds the diaphragm. No new fuel taps available in Australia from Yamaha for another 3 weeks+ (on the way from Japan). Cost varied from $203 - $230 AUD depending upon dealer. I was preparing for a touring holiday therefore had one day to get this issue sorted. Purchased a used fuel tap from wrecker. Older version with the elbow cast in position. Rubber hose only just met with fuel tap. During my epic 4000 kms, the replacement tap started to leak. Yet to investigate- just kept on riding.
