Re: 3rd gear whinning
Same 3rd gear as 850 TeDiuM - same whine - mine whined from new - never got any worse so I suppose I had to believe the Dealer said "They all do that Sir"

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Resonant frequency, Everything has one of these and yes maybe thats whats at play to give the inherant whine of the gears. As with the misses it's resonate frequently tho...

Re: 3rd gear whinning
I find mine whines at 3000rpm on the money. Doesn't matter what gear I am in. It also happens to be around 60km/h in 3rd gear. About 200rpm either side and it drops off. Resonance as cob mentioned comes to mind here.

Off topic perhaps but it's the wind noise that fecks your hearing, not the sound of the exhaust. Wear earplugs if you want to be able to hear when you are olderRane850 wrote:In autumn I made DB killers to my exhausts and started to ride without earplugs

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Doesn't matter with earplugs in or out when i break wind it still resonates thro my body at about 80 cycles and on a good one around the 50 to 60db mark ..
But yes your right, they do make it easier to here the resonance from the motor as your sitting on the bike riding along you all (you and the bike )all become One.
AAAHHH Grasshopper.
You can hear the clunks and clinks of gearchanges more and feel more of the growl from the motor and here it working with the harsh top end whishy washy wind noise taken away with the earplugs

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Mine does it too, in that 50 - 60kmh commute phase and at around 3000rpm. Above or below that rpm or in 2nd or 4th gear it goes away. Bikes been like that since I owned it in '02 (16000km - now 71000km) and it's never any got any worse.

Re: 3rd gear whinning
I was never too worried about my 3rd gear noise as I've heard the same or very similar noise from several other bikes over the years. Not all TRX's either.

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Now I finally had time to find places to all hoses and wires ( If you make total engine remolval, remember to take enough pictures, it amazing hoe you forget things in few months..) and have had first 50 km with new 3rd gear set. I just love this "silence"!

Mine also whines in 3rd in the lower rev range.
My solution = more throttle!
Seriously though mine has done 23,000 miles (allegedly), so just shy of 40K klicks.

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Mine's done 30,00km and whines a bit in 3rd gear too. It only seems to do it at commuting speed/RPM.
I was concerned about it when I first bought the bike, but it hasn't gotten any worse and I don't really notice it now unless I listen for it.

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Hi,
Well mine has done 93,000K's and third gear was whining when I got it at 60,000 and is no worse
now! Some oils seem to quieten it down a bit and some make it worse, but I can't remember which!
Must make a note next time. Use third a lot as I live in the French Alps, lots of bends and not
many straights.
Paul.

Re: 3rd gear whinning
Sorry coming in so late on this topic. Mine has whined in third gear for as long as i can remember. It has now done 35,000 miles and i have no intention of doing anything to it yet.
