Valve Trouble?

Post by clivo882 » Wed Aug 24, 2016 10:08 pm

Hi Folks,

I've just barked my '96 TRX up for the first time in about 4 years and, unsurprisingly, the ol' girl isn't happy. I'm going to strip and clean the carbs (my employer has just acquired an ultrasonic cleaner :D ) but the greatest cause for concern is an occasional back fire through the left carb. Running the engine with the tank and airbox removed aprox every 30 seconds or so there is a real blast and you can see a flash below the butterfly. I've spotted posts elsewhere on the form relating to inlet valve problems on early bikes and a valve sticking or not sealing would explain what I'm seeing. How common are problems of this nature, and can anyone suggest any other cause for what I'm seeing?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Clivo

Does she start easy from cold? Have you checked compression and or valve clearances? If she starts ok and the others are good it`s the carb. ;)
