TRX trackday Knockhill
My first trackday with the TRX. I changed the Dunlop Qualifiers for Michelin Power RS tyres.
Got to say I was a bit apprehensive about new, unscrubbed strangly treaded rubber on a track powerwashed by a thunderstorm an hour previously but all was well on the day - I was well impressed with them in the wet. Had a bit of fun with an MT10 arround half way through. A lot of guys getting serious with full wets and tyre warmers -too modern sorcery for me!
Turn the sound down low - it's shit!

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
It's all in the mind Ian - the first couple of laps were to take of the shine off them and they felt fine - once through the traffic I realised I was riding to what the tyres were telling me then once out on my own, my head took over and I thought "Shit, I'm going too quick for the wet!" and knocked it off a bit - all in the headcoxylaad wrote:nice one Alan. big balls for heading out in the rain on those tyres!!!

That's why you hover your knee so when it does let go a sharp prod on the deck and the slide is corrected by offloading the sliding wheel. Sounds like shite but it's saved me a pile of fibreglass on a few occasionscoxylaad wrote:all in the head. until you lose the front haha

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
unfortunately after 4 years of doing track days I can still remove my knee sliders and sell them as new!
no idea where the ground is when I am riding but its not anywhere near my knee!

Me too - don't get the fixation of dragging a knee with road tyres. BUT - a hovering knee is handy for saving a mishap

I rely on the toe sliders to tell me I am on the limit......not using knees either.....

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
thats a good point. in order for my knees to touch the ground half my foot would have had to have been ground off
Slight exaggeration but but toe does seem to touch first

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
if you use the whole tread of the tyre.....you doing something right. If I can change my riding style to "kiss the mirrors" more, and hang a bit more off the bike, I would probably get my knees down.

If you're on a race setup bike on race tyres at race lean angles then yup, you'll get your knee down (if you so desire). Better to concentrate on getting the lap times down and less on the kudos of scraping a bit of plastic IMO.
But maybe I'm just an old fart

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
Its was two old farts that told me to get more off the bike....they say I ride old style......but personally i need to get the lines right first.
Tend to turn in a bit too early on some corners. Maybe it will change when I tweak ride height front and back as it is still a little lazy to turn.

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
Dropping the front gives you faster turn in to the corner, but your already turning too early aren't you????
By raising rear ride height, it is used to manage your exit of corner to stop you running wide ( under steer) out of the corners and introducing more anti squat.
Have you sorted correct Spring rate and sag yet???
Edit.. Just read your weight on the other thread.. Your about 35kg heavier than the std spring rate set up for the trx if you bike is still in std format.
Try breaking earlier get the bike settled and carry more corner speed ...

Re: TRX trackday Knockhill
It has taken me a long time to get the suspension setup to suit my 80 and a bit kg.
The rear was always good with the Ohlins but it also showed up the inadequate stock forks. I wanted to keep the stock look so went down the Race Tech emulator route some years back but could never get it feeling in synch to the rear end.
I ended up with 0.90 linear and springs the low speed damping plate with 4 holes in it, yellow high speed spring 2 turn in and 140mm gap of Valvoline ATF transmission oil. I now have a setup I'm finally happy with and in both the wet dry track sessions I couldn't fault what was happening below me - it's taken a while but eventually got it there

Cool bananas, sorting suspension isn't and easy task and takes time and patience but feels great when you get it working well together.
So what's the next challenge...
