Recommended Brake Rotors? (Aus)

Post by TRiXy » Wed Mar 26, 2008 12:27 pm

hey all,

just a quick question... Anyone able to recommend a source for Front brake rotors in Aus? I've heard that "aussie bike discs" are good, they're prices are the lowest around ($199ea), but my old man used them for his bike (BMW K100) and he said they were crap, advised me to stay well away. the local bike shop is too damned expensive ($300ea) and probably use the same rotors as aussie bike discs.

any advice is greatly appreciated.

Metal Gear are 'sposed to be ok. And they do a set for the TRX.

You could always try some american bike parts/accessories sites. None of them will have stock specifically for the trx, but the trx front brakes are the same as some other yamaha models. I know the rear rotor is the same as heaps of other yamahas, so maybe someone here can fill us in on what is interchangeable (yzf600?).

Only other Yam that shares the same size front discs with the TRX is the TDM850

Same spacing and diameter but different discs (FZR600R for example run thinner discs and they are dished slighlty)

FZR600R part number is the same as the TRX. Maybe different years had different discs or sonething.

theres a mob in QLD that you can send your disks to, and they remove the studs and inners, and press on new disks to your spec (wave, bigger diameter, thicker, etc) but i cant remember the name of them for the life of me. If its a common bike (R1 / CBR / GSXR / bandit / hornet / etc) its fairly much a change-over as they carry stock 9 times outta 10.
I dont know how much they cost, but loads of racers use them.. So obviously the stuff they make the disks out of is fairly good. But obviously a premium price. But get em thicker, should last ages.

Failing that, find a place that sells "Galfer" disks. They are wavey, the same as bobtrx, ive heard great stories about their gear. But dont know if they make a TRX specific disk.. Its worth asking.

Personally, i made my own disks, work wonders, and cost me $50 and a carton of booze. But i have the resources to do it. I use a R1 front wheel, so i dont have a TRX stud pattern to use sorry.

I had thought about making my own, but honestly don't know what material they use... laser cutting it would be easy enough, but how to treat it? are they quenched? normalised?

thanks for all the suggestions guys, will look into it...

I think quan might be talking about this mob:
The chain gang

They do sprockets and rotors. I haven't had any experience with them though...

yeah, i checked out the chain gang, and they're rotors are zinc coated (galv) just the same as the guy at aussie bike dics.. but they're more expensive. my old man warned me to steer clear of the galv rotors since he had problems with them on his bike... but i half get the feeling he didn't follow the bed-in procedure... anyone else have experience with these???
