well it has been a very busy Christmas and there is a lot of stuff still to do,

the bike runs but the carbs need a sync and tune and I need an accelerator cable, speedo cable, screen and need to do the brakes and a whole heap of other stuff but progress has been good.

Took this picture last night and stripped it again today and started sand back and buff the paint

ok well took the forks apart this evening. I had been waiting for the bike shops to open and got some oil hoping to just change the oil (seals are still good)

Anyway took them off the bike and found this. Not a happy camper.

Any suggestions for replacement progressive springs spacers and will be doing bushes and seals as well??

Not looking to really alter the handling at this stage as that was a project I figured I would look at down the track after I have ridden her for a while but looks like I will be spending a few quid just to make it safe so suggestions for a decent stockish set up with aftermarket parts would be welcome.

Also might explain Dave's wobbly test ride on the bike...not just a flat tyre
Dav wrote:Hi Paul,
Congrats and welcome to the forum :) I went and looked at that bike the day before I bought mine...the front tyre was way underinflated so my test ride was only a short run down the street and a wobbly u-turn back to the owner to suggest a visit to the servo  Glad it finally has a good home and I look forward to your restoration efforts. Where in Sydney are you?
I am in Bexley by the way

thats a nasty piece of work there, would you concider using a set of yzf 600 fronts..? might find a set cheap.
Or someone with a set spare..!
Be handy to insert your location into your avatar box there on the right too,.. Bexley..UK i guess...you,ll have a better response..cheers

I hadnt thought about it, figured I would just change the springs, bushes seals and put in new spacers. Are the YZF600 forks (presume mid 90,s model) just a straight swap or do you have to change the triples and front wheels as well?

ok so did a bit of searching and found this:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4652

So it seem that they are a straight swap plus new spacers to suit. But is there much involved if you want to keep the front mudguard?

looks like you may just need a fork rebuild with springs weighted to suit you.
alternatively, R6S from the states run 41mm conventional forks ala TRX.
cheers

From what I've heard, and correct me if I'm wrong, but apparently Yamaha Thundercat cartridges fit straight into std TRX forks.

Thanks Fung,

Yep at this stage I think I will just get the forks rebuilt with progressive springs and new bushes and seals and depending on how I feel later I might look into upgrading them, but given the reviews for the standard set up are genearlly ok with the exception of it being a bit soft, stiffer springs should give me a decent set up

Yep sounds pretty good. The pipes that are on it have a real rasp to them, but unfortunately they are probably a bit load considering I will be using the bike daily so I will look into getting a removable baffle for it.

Anyway I dropped the forks in the other day for some new springs bushes and seals so hope to get them back tomorrow or next week.

My accelorator cable arrived and I fitted it yesterday. Took me bloody ages to get the pull side on.

Picked up a battery this morning and a new screen is on the way from ScreensForBikes, and then is is just polishing and a final check over of all my fasteners before she goes for a blue slip (with the stock pipes on)

who is doing your forks?
what springs are going in?
i ended up dropping the forks thru, reducing the fluids air gap by 10mm and staying with the std weight fluid, springs and preload settings.
got the R6 conversion on the rear tho.
much better than the std shockie.
if you know anyone who is into car audio, you may be able to do the db test before hitting machinery eh.
beats mucking around with swapping pipes if its close to the limit.
cheers
