The rod in the hole is the best method of finding TDC accurately if and only if it is combined with a DTI. The DTI will pick up even 1 degree of rotation.
I would use a modified spark plug and weld a tube to the top of it with a turned disc with a bolt in to hold my DTI. You can buy extension sections for a DTI and when these are long enough to reach the piston its so easy it screws in as 1 assembly by hand. Im not to sure if you would get it in with the engine in the frame though.
I do lots of work with 2 strokes and this method is the only one I would use. I never trust the flywheel markings for TDC as there is to much dwell at BDC & TDC.

True, So, the piston STOP method is inaccurate, Finding TDC using a Dial Indicator through the plug hole is very simple with a two stroke as there are no cams, valves etc in the road and you can screw the Dial Indicator directly into the plug hole, not easy to do with this engine. The method used would be to find an angle before and after "theoretical TDC" and half that, giving TDC and is only used for ignition timing!!Kenny wrote:The rod in the hole is the best method of finding TDC accurately if and only if it is combined with a DTI.
