My suggestion, if you are generally happy with the handling of the bike, is to get the Ignitech ignition from Cobba. It is the best money I have spent on my TRX in 18 years, apart from fuel and tyres.
This is a direct swap for the original unit, can be done by anyone in five minutes, and makes the bike much easier to ride at lower revs. It is already set up, no need to change any settings unless you want to tinker.
FCR carbs are flat slide type, the standard carbs are CV type. Flat slides are much more responsive to throttle and certainly make a difference when riding hard. CV's may not be as responsive but are more economical.
You won't get much value from flat slide carbs without a better flowing exhaust such as the Akrapovic 2-1 system.
Once you start on this path you find you then want:
Better brakes, which is never a bad thing and is an easy mod
Better suspension, not as easy but some fairly simple alternatives
then... more power! and you end up like Cobba, building a race engine for a street bike. Not that that is a bad thing ;)

Yeah dicky, your comments in Cobba's Ignition thread pretty much sold me, it was like you listing all the things I find challenging with mine as fixed by the new ignition box.

Just got her back from the mechanics (the long way). Once again he raved about how pristine and "never abused" she is. He says the tank hasn't been off more than twice and that the usual rounded-off, hard to get at nuts were all in factory condition. He reckons the radiator has never been off and that means (as you'll all know) that the clearances had never been done. Happily they were all spot on. He said the exhaust side were a tad toward the wider end of the tolerances, but certainly not worth adjusting. He said when revving her up, a he could detect just a hint of occasional blueish smoke and reckons there might be either a little getting past the valve stems, or that she was so babied at the later stages of run in that the original owner didn't bed the rings well and glazed the bore.

Anyhows. All fluids renewed, do-dahs adjusted, a clean bill of health and a gold star from teacher.

So guess what I'm doing in the morning :D
