Just called into the local yamaha dealers, saw this:

So the thing about compression over tension is not an issue.

Maybes I need to have a lug welded to the front of the swing arm and a straight box section torque arm put on it.

I would go with that, you will need to find a mig welder though

Did you look at the OEM 9er caliper bracket.
It mounts in a similar place to your plate.
Cheers,
Fung.

I am running an R6 rear wheel, the caliper on that is completely different to the one on the TDM900 or the TRX.

It's a shame you couldn't just mod the std TRX caliper bracket and keep it under the swing arm.. Just a little more weight down lower

The R6 caliper is like a quarter of the weight of the trx one. I will make it work.

well personally I dont see an issue but if we do need to revisit it ........ one answer would be to make the caliper underslung

There has to be a Yam caliper out there to suit and you can fit the torque arm under tension to please the throng :)

Fair point with the traillie Ian - though it does have ABS to stop the excessive forces - plus the arm is straight.

I'm not knocking your work coxxy - far from it, respect for the whole transformation - I just wouldn't want anyone to get hurt cos if it does buckle, it could also jamb the brake on.................

I am not offended Al, I would rather someone speak up if they thought something was dangerous.

I havent done anything tonight on the bike but I did have a look at it, and I could cant imagine the forces being generated that will bend that bar. Its really short and its 6mm. It just doesnt look the best.

not sure abs will reduce the load on the bar though mate, it will introduce an on off judder which will be worse. one the back wheel locks up there is no more force on that torque arm.

I think I will do something else however.

Another way might be to make a plate with a ridge on it that fits into the slot on the caliper, then bolts ( or attaches somehow ) to the inside of the swingarm. I'm second guessing the R6 fitment here. :dontknow:
Just throwing idea's around, tell me to bugger off if you like, other's have.
Cheers,
Alan.

Has anyone got a picture of the TRX oil pickup and strainer that sits in the sump?

The TDM900 one is identical apart from the stubby pickup pipe is a little bit longer with the deeper sump.

I could do with some photos and perhaps rough measurements so I can trim my TDM one down.

Also, on a 35k engine, how many bits of metal in the sump are deemed acceptable?

just tiny bits. I am not concerned. its probably off the 30k mile clutch now that I think about it.

Playing rugby this weekend, so I will do what I can on the bike if I am still able to walk on Sunday!

Small update.

Not a great deal has happened on the bike the last few weeks, however an impending track day at Cadwell Park this Friday has relit my enthusiasm to get the job complete.

so this is a thunderace rear swingarm with a difference can you tell what?
Image

Image

Yes its the lug for the torque arm, hacked it off the underside and had it welded onto the top of the swing arm to fit my R6 caliper.
That is pretty much all that has happened lately.

threw it back together to tonight to test it. it seems to work pretty well:
Image

Got a couple of little bits left to do on it but on the whole its ready to go. My rear sprocket needs shimming out 1mm, but Kayla has that in hand for me.

Next job is to clean my ugly welding up, then make a battery tray to house all the electrics under the seat.

I have reprofiled the seat ie hacked a load of foam out the back of it, I need someone who will recover it for me. any ideas?
