530 chain conversion

Post by Snod Blatter » Sat Nov 24, 2012 2:56 pm

Hi all,

I now find myself in the market for a chain and some sprockets, and some research suggests that 530 equipment can be had for around the same price as 525, which seems like an opportunity! Some further research suggests that it's fairly easy, these sprockets match the dimensions of the originals but the question is has anyone tried it? Is there enough clearance around the front sprocket? Is there anything else to watch out for?

Cheers

We've just done this on the TRX we're doing at the minute, mainly because we had the new parts kicking around from another Yam we ended up not doing! The front is from an FZR1000 Genesis (16t but you can get a 17t and it's the same spline pattern/thickness as the TRX 525 sprocket).

The advantage of doing a 520/530 conversion is that chains are loads cheaper because they're a more common size :D

Ah, wonderful! I'll track down a 17t sprocket as I'm in this for the extra chain life so going down a tooth is a bit counterproductive ;)

No clearance issues at all?

No, it fits fine. 520, 525 and 530 chains are the same pitch (I think!), it's just the roller widths that are different. The actual sprockets are the same width where they fit on the counter shaft.

edit- give me a shout if you need some stuff, we've got trade accounts with a few different parts suppliers and we can do you parts for cheaper than RRP :D

I just looked for a Thunderace (same bolt pattern as the TRX :D ) 530 conversion sprocket and ordered one with 40 teeth, but they come in a load of different sizes.

I went the other way to a 520, easy enough with a _lot_ of digging around.

Well Kayla supplied the stuff for a very reasonable cost and on Saturday it got fitted, mostly by my Dad truth be told. Anyway it all seems to fit just fine, no clearance issues just like Kayla says. In fact it fits so well I wonder if they were originally designed with 530 stuff in mind..

Personally I like the look of the beefier equipment better!

It even fits the swingarm protector rubber thing, honestly it all just slaps together.

I've not ridden it yet as it's freezing out and I seem to be missing the Eskimo genes some lucky people have, but I will report back on if it feels any different and on distance between adjustments. But so far I'm very happy with it 8)

I had a 530 chain and sprocket set, and I was forever adjusting the chain,, I now run a standard chain sprocket set and i never need to touch them. Go figure?
Mind you, I think maybe the chain quality of the 530 chain I had could have been better.
