Rear wheel and gearing questions.

Will a 1996 thunderace rear wheel fit the standard swingarm?

Is it a better option to go wheel plus swinger off the thundercat?

Opinion sought on 15/39 gearing. Not interested in top speeds.....

I ran 15 / 39 good fun, but the chain cuts the rubber swingarm protector more if not kept perfectly adjusted. A better option is to go 17 / 42 or 43, the larger diameter (stock) gearbox sprocket helps keep the chain away from that swingarm.

You can use a Thunderace swingarm and wheel, goes straight in! Not certain if you can use the Thunderace wheel in the stock TRX swingarm but someone will be along to confirm yay or nay.

I haven't tried but I know for starters that the rear wheel spindle on the thunderace is of a bigger diameter than the TRX one. I can have a quick go at placing the thunderace wheel into the TRX swingarm that I have next weekend if that helps?! Peeps have also fitted XJR wheels into TRX swingarms, just need some spacers.

For the price of them on Ebay, I'd buy a thunderace swingarm as it is really a straight bolt off/bolt on swap. You'll also need to buy a thunderace rear caliper carrier.

Indeed it is but bearing and spacer swaps / make new are not too much trouble to do, then the TRX spindle could be utilised again. Thunderace chain 525? And what width is the Thunderace rim?

Thunderace chain is 525 as the sprocket carrier can take a TRX sprocket and I believe the width to be 5.5 to run a 180 tyre.

You might lose a little on the chain adjustment as the 180 tyre could foul the inside of the TRX swingarm when the chain is new and the wheel is as far forward as it`ll go I suppose. I DID look at going the YZF750 rear wheel route but have now elected to keep the TRX wheel, 160 tyre combination for maximum `flickability`.

The Thunderace wheel is the same as the YZF750 one, they're both 5.5"

I think the Thunderace arm looks pretty good in a TRX, and with an 'ace front end it still looks sort of standard-ish but with beefier forks that work properly! Mince is right though, there's absolutely no need for a wider rear wheel in a TRX but it does look cool

I (and I think lots of others as well) used 17/42.

I run 16x39 and the bike is a tad more lively.

Wheel + swinger is the way to go!

You'll need a slightly longer chain though as it seems the thunderace swingarm is a little longer than the TRX. From memory, you'll need a 54 link chain for the thunderace conversion (I'll have to check on mine though so don't quote me).

54????? The stock chain is 110! I reckon more like a 116 or 120 and you `may` need to take a link or two out.

Monday morning 10.00am and still not properly woken up... the week is going to be LONG!

I was talking crap here.... pretty sure I run 114 links (57plates) whith the thunderace setup and I think I had 108 links (54plates) with the TRX swingarm. I'll check on the bike before the weekend as see if this includes the chain link.

Yep, go up on the rear rather than down on the front, apparently your chain will last longer.

I'm running 17/41, keen to try 17/43 next, see if I can get 2nd gear wheelies happening

That 47 won't do much for the bike but it would be a long time before you needed to buy another front tyre.

I've got the R6 shock + Kayla adapter. Will that fit the thunderace swingarm without dramas?

I have only had the beast on the road for less than a week, enjoying it to the max (except for the North Coast rain!)

Any suggestions for base setups for the R6 shock? Must admit, feels pretty good on standard settings, but you can't help but have a play.....

Are the 4 position Kayla dogbones worth investing in?
