buy a second TRiXie

Today I spoke (on the phone) to a guy who has to sell his TRX:

Model '95 or '96 he said, but color is red/black so it should be either an import model (red paint, black engine)
or a '97 model ...

Absolutely original, rear tire and brakes (brake pads?!) new ...

... with only 20'000 km on the clock

... for about EUR 2.600,- (or less)

I was the third one who he spoke with and for this weekend there are no dates for a test drive or the like ...

I did'nt have seen her yet, but I bet it's quite a bargain ...

On the other hand - I already got a very nice and very good one
and just for keeping the other one for future times? I don't know ...

Last couple of weeks I thought of buying a cheapish (maybe a light accident with a lot of scratches or so ...) RSV Mille for the tracks, ... but if I decide to buy a second TRX there's no more money left for the motorcycle hobbyhorse ('cause there's also my slalom car, the CX 500 Euro and no win in the lottery ).

So now folks, what would you advise me to do:
Just to let go the chance of getting a (probably) mint TRX
or
jump at the opportunity
or
wait for a RSV

Mines a 95 import, currently has 25,000 km on the clock! Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be the right decision.

Buy the minter if You think You'll keep it for a long time, they are becoming more and more rare, and will be a good investment. My guess is the TRX will in a few years time be (is?) a modern classic, like Katana 1100, CBR1100R, CX500 Turbo, CB500 etc. On the other hand, a Mille will be nice for the track. I've been in to the same thoughts, keeping all original parts for a future restoration, question is if this will pay off somehow... But then I can't trash/crash my TRX on the track. Have to get a mint TRX myself, obviously. Or a Mille, or maybe a Duc, or...

I wouldn't buy two of the same. It's not going to be worth the investment of money, and more to the point you can acheive the same thing by finding some used TRX plastics and bits, cleaning/fixing them up and storing them.

Having said that, I actually wouldn't bother with an RSV purely for the track. 95% of any cornering advantage is the rider anyway, so why pay for a bit more power on the straights? Based on my extensive personal experience as a crap rider, I have frequently out-cornered just-very-slightly-more-crap riders on much quicker, objectively faster bikes around a racetrack using my slow, ancient TRX.

And it is fast enough to actually achieve the target corner-entry speed on most tracks in the world (i.e. up to about 130 mph), unlike my old KTM Duke, so there are very few tracks you have to avoid. OK, perhaps the Turdburglar-ring, but then people who go there a lot seem to end up crashing on some porsche's coolant or diesel from a tour bus.

An RSV as a winter/rainy weather hack and an option for track days would be fun. But I'd think of something simpler, lighter and cheaper if you want a trackday bike though. Reliable, trustworthy CBR-600-F2 or 96-99 GSX-R-750 track bikes can be yours on ebay.de for a small amount of money with all the set-up work and fancy parts purchased for you.

Good thaughts -

I wouldn't buy two of the same ...

... but it isn't for corner speed that my thaughts go in the direction of a RSV - indeed it's the speed on the straights I miss on the track with the TRiXie.
Though it is much fun to overtake a "faster" bloke in three consecutive corners it got on my nerves from time to time that the guys on a four cylinder came back on the straights and parking in front of me in the next corner
And ... the TRiXie is the strongest bike I had so far - maybe it's time to test something over 100 bhp.
Wherein it has to be a two cylinder bike to be allowed to the "Twins Only" or "Twin Days" at Oschersleben

Yes, I understand what you mean. Don't know how it is in Germany, but over here in the UK things have really changed since I was last riding trackdays in the 90s. I turned up at my first UK track day for a long while this year and so many guys have the most ridiculous bikes. There was one guy with a brand new 08 GSX-R-1000 and the only thing original on it I think was the frame and swingarm. Everything else titanium, carbon, tuned engine etc. And he was in the novice group! And he wasn't the only one by a long way. Ducati 1098 Rs, one guy with a brand new Virgin Yamaha replica R1 with tuned engine, Ohlins everything, etc.

You go on an ordinary bike and those guys just open the throttle and pass you on the straights, then they block you (intentionally or accidentally) in the corners. Actually, you can read about these guys and their huge wallets every month if you buy Performance Bikes magazine...I think it's written for them.

My solution is go to smaller tracks and ride with friends who also have "normal" bikes, but I can see why you want more power so you can enjoy the tracks more.

Oh, but I can still recommend GSX-R-750s from personal experience. Very, very fast on tracks, very fun to ride, reliable and you can find them very cheap.

If I hear (read) that, I think it is here not quite as bad as at your place (but still bad enough)

Here are also guys in the novice group with brand new R1s who ask "What is wrong with my tire - should I worry?" when their tires just look as they do after a good turn ...

Again thank you for your recommendation (GSX-R 750) but I still think I'll buy a two cylinder, if any - 'cause the last two years we are 4 or 5 guys on TRXs who meet at Oschersleben (TwinsOnly) - and that's an event that's worth being part of it!

Regarding your advice to go to smaller tracks ... I certainly would, but the only tracks within my reach are Salzburgring (veeeery boring under 150 bhp), Hockenheimring (quite far, not tried it yet, but not really a small one), Oschersleben Motorsport Arena and Lausitzring (both quite similar to my opinion - and good tracks for the TRX).

All other tracks (Most, Brünn (CZ), Spa (BE), ...) are way to far from Munich

Maybe Anneau du Rhin (FR) next year ...

It's the MO-InTeam from the bikes magazin MO that organizes the Twins Only Oschersleben.

In the issue No. 9 (I think) there was for the first time a big report thereof in MO of this year's event (and this year we didn't gather for the group picture 'cause we thought it's not worth it - and then they put it on a double side at the beginning of the report )

Don't know exactly when it will be next year but I think in the second half of June (as it used to be).

And there's a further similar event (but which I couldn't attend until now) around the same time (one or two weeks before the Twins Only in the last years):
Twin Days the "Days of Thunder" with Team Motobike.

Would be nice to welcome a further TRX at Oschersleben!

I don't know why TRXs on the track seem to confuse people. I mentioned to my Yamaha dealer the TRX had recently been on a few track days and he seemed to want to give me a medal for bravery. As if it was a V-Max or something. One guy on a GSX-R track bike actually came back to the pits this last July looking shocked and crestfallen and said "I can't believe it, you passed me on that!". You get lots of people staring at it and looking puzzled. It's strange - if it was an SV650 track bike hooning around, I don't think they'd have batted an eyelid.

so i have seen yours and it is a very nice bike and with a little work will be a very very nice bike worth a good amount by its self. you could buy the mint low k bike and have a minter. sell your one off and put the money back in the pot and save for just a bit longer and then buy the millie.

you will get both the mint trx and and the millie, best of both worlds
