just passed mot with a advisory front forks are to stiff i have fitted a r1 front end and the tester said possibly to much oil how can this be or are they knackerd are they easy to service or expensive help !! would like to come to avebury on it cheers dill

if it's just oil it's not hard to do. pretty much the same as any other fork. best thing you can do is seek out a pdf download of the R1 service manual.

Too stiff? Have you tried backing off all the damping adjusters?

this is the setting for the R1 forks,, this is a road setting only ,,,the top adjuster 3 turns out from fully in ( rebound damping ),,,,,the bottom adjuster 5to6 turns out from fully in( compression damping ) ,,,but before you do any of that you must set your static sag ,,try and aim for a 32mm rear ,,and 42mm front ,,this is with you on the bike with all your riding gear on ,,i cant tell you the settings for the rear std damper as i have an ohlins rear shock,,, front fork oil i ended up with 7.5 weight but the level is 10ml more ,,,this will give you a compliant road setting that's ok for the trx ,,,this subject has been covered before ,,,do a search ,,these are my settings that i ended up with ,,you may like a different feeling ,,

so how do you know that both fork legs are set up the same?

all the info on what to twiddle and where it is located will be in the service manual too.

i dont :oops: i bought them on ebay and just fitted them no adjustments nothing :oops: :oops: they are as they came out of the wrapping

the rebound adjuster is in the same place as on the TRX forks - in the middle of the preload adjuster on the fork cap. the compression adjuster is on the rear of the fork legs at the bottom of the forks - it is a slot head screw in a small casting.

turn them all in until they're lightly seated then back them out to the settings steve gave. see if the forks are any more compliant. how many rings are showing on the preload adjusters?

being pedantic I'd call that 7, but long as they're the same on both it ain't gonna matter right now.

what year R1 are your forks from?

if you are 20st then there is no way that 7 rings showing is going to be right to get the correct amount of static sag ,, and to be honest it will be impossible with std fork springs ,,so as i see it you have a few options,,,leave it,, and risk bottoming out under braking , not good ,,get a re spring done by kais ,,maxton ,,ect,,it all depends on how you ride the bike ,,what rear shock are you running ? if its the std one then to get your suspension somewhere near you are going to have to re spring your bike , to give you some idea std R1 forks are sprung for approx 10st ,you can just get away with it if you are 14st but that's it ,,also std R1 forks dont have enough rebound and to much compression damping ,,this can be modified with different oil ,,the std oil in R1s is 5 weight ,so you can change the oil for thicker to get more rebound but then you also get more compression ,which it already has to much !!! so can you see its a can of worms ,,,and the only sure way is a re spring and a re valve at both ends of the bike ,,there is NO easy fix , sorry if this has been a bit long winded but trust me its the tip of a very big iceberg ,,but i will help you all i can with advice as iam sure will others on the forum
