Oil change today but .....

Post by Kenny » Sun Dec 13, 2009 5:09 pm

I fitted a new filter at the same time and when refilling with Motul 5100 it took all 4 litres as most have said it does. But its only on the lower mark but goes up to half way when its running. Do I check with the engine running or off? How much oil is needed from lower to full mark?
My bike maybe a dinosaur but it still has some bite & has a mighty roar.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy ........ but usually I let her sleep in

You check the oil with the engine off, but after having run the engine up to temperature. I usually check mine after every ride and keep it topped up. When the engine's running any oil that may have drained into the case is pumped back into the oil tank which is why the level goes up when you start the engine.

edit- I think Hein Gericke semi-synth is the same as Motul, and a little cheaper. Having said that, I use Asda's own generic 10/40 and haven't had any problems (yet!)

Once the engine is up to temperature and the engine is off do you let the oil settle for a few minutes before checking the level or do you do it straight away?

Straight away, because that's the oil level the engine runs at ;)
