Having a bit of trouble checking my oil level. Last week it was mid-way between the lines in the sight glass. This week though it seems to be just above the window???

Followed the methods on here but it still looks high

On my last bike rising oil level meant fuel contamination butI've had a smell of the filler cap and it doesn't smell very much of petrol. Carbs are coming out for new needles and emulsion tubes anyway so I will be stripping them and setting up.

Are the TRXs prone to float needles problems?

Best checked after it`s been running and the motors still warm BBB.And obviously on a level surface or a paddock stand.
If you`re sure you`ve filled it with the right quantity of oil,then it looks high or way over the level you could have an oil pump issue or sticking oil return valve.
Not seen any members post on the forum about the oil level going UP!
Most seem to have oil usage issues but I`m lucky,my old girl doesn`t use a drop.
When you start the bike and look at the sightglass in the oil tank,do you see the level drop or the oil circulating?
You could also carefully remove the filler cap while it`s running and look/listen for circulation but have a rag handy for any oil escaping.DO NOT rev it with the cap off though,you`ll get a free moisturise.

being a vacuum type carb would not this stop any problem of fuel contamination??? does this occur when the motor is stopped?? Would not the vaccum operation on the fuel tap stop any excess fuel weeping if theres a sticky float??? Or am off on a tangent again and need smell my socks to bring me back to reality...

checked the bike after a 15mile commute yesterday, oil circulates ok when running (sight glass looks empty).

No foaming, mayo or any other obvious contamination. Just odd that last week it was midway between the lines and now its higher

Did you fill it and check it when cold ?? As said it needs to be done after a ride to warm and circulate the oil. It will appear to rise if checked and filled cold, then looked at after a ride out!

Did you ckeck it while the engine was running?

I suspect that between the level being lower and now I may have topped up the oil when cold and possibly forgotten.

Will drain a bit out the sump today and report back.

In my experience these things are a complete pig when it comes to showing how much oil they actually have.

I end up checking after a good run, about 15-20 mins after I've stopped.

Mine never used to use oil, it does seem to now though.

when i do an oil change i find it best to fill it up to the top mark on the sight glass , run it for a few minutes then top it up to half way on the sight glass , that way when its gets hot it is usually bang on ,, i then check it after a run when its hot and top up if needs be,, you will find that when you start a cold engine all the oil dissaperes from the sight glass but once its warmed up the level is correct,, well it does on mine and now mine doesn't use a drop

possibly stoopid question but....
Sat on the bike after a longish run with the engine on tick-over there was very little movement in the sightglass, on giving the engine some hefty revs the oil level would drop to around half to a quarter full then move back up as the revs drop.

Is this perfectly ok or should the level be noticably moving on tick-over not just heavy revving?

Only had 'normal' sumps before and mechanically paranoid

Sounds perfectly normal to me.
The oil pumps(TRX`s have two)are geared to the crankshaft,therefore they deliver oil to the motor in direct relation to the quantity required through their gearing.
At tickover the pressure and delivery from the pumps will drop slightly.

yes perfectly normal ,, now take 5 or 6 pints of beer and chillout

A few questions from a new TRX's owner
Can I use the TDM 900 oil dipstick?
I need the order of the 5 bolts from the oil filter case as I do not remember the right order.
